What a great site!! I have recently purchased a 72 Charger SE 440 car. The original block is gone but has a 69 replacement HP in its place. A pretty loaded SE, power windows, AC, rear defrost, etc. For all I know, all SE models came fairly loaded. My problem is I can find almost zero production info on the 72, it's like no one cares at all. I was considering contacting GTS but I've read that they arent very timely when it comes to year makes like mine. Every production book I've researched seems to stop at 71 and continue at 74! What is up with that!!! My car is not a Ralley but is a true 440 car with a slapstick, rally dash, etc...  (VIN WP29U2G150952)  The fender tag is missing and I've torn the car apart looking for it. I would really like to get a tag repro'd and understand without the SO # or broadcast sheet I may be screwed. Anybody have any ideas I can try? I know the car was built at St. Louis but other than that I'm at a loss. This will be a real nice car when I'm done and will actually have a 375hp 440 in lieu of the 280hp it was born with. One other thing that I noticed is it has no sure grip which strikes me  odd seeing that it has 3.55 gears (yep, the diffy tag is still there!) and the 440. What were they thinking!?! I am a true Mopar fan and care very much about preserving these cars. I had a 68 charger in high school (1976) a 70 Challenger RT (1993) and currently own an 05 300C. I am looking forward to the new Challenger and as soon as I convince my wife that she needs one we will be ordering one!! It didnt take much to sell her on the Hemi C, she's a pretty good sport. ANY HELP I CAN GET WITH THE CHARGER WOULD BE NUCH APPRECIATED!!! THANKS, BRIAN

Sounds like a nice car and you came to the right place.   :yesnod:  I think you might be screwed on the fender tag issue.  If you dont have the tag or the buildsheet you wont know the codes that would go on your tag so it would be impossible to make an accurate one...

Thank you for responding to my post. I thought I read somewhere if I could locate the sales order # that GTS may be able to help. I've also read that the SO # may be stamped on a radiator support but a quick glance didnt turn one up. Is the ST LOUIS plant still around?  :brickwall:

Galen (GTS) is a great source for info when he can get to it and now his Wife just passed, so he'll be out for a while.  That said, I'll add what I can...

They made approx 20964 SE's in 1972. 755 with the 440, and approx. 105 with the 440, auto, 3.55:1 combo.

I'm not sure you could get the 3.55 without Sure Grip... the data I have doesn't show any one-legger 3.55's....

Note:  Production data is based off of rounded percentages of total production.  Therefore, the numbers will not "add up" in many cases.  This was how Chrysler used to track options... not the most efficient for us hobbiests, but it worked for them at the time.

Hope that helped

Thank you for the reply, what a couple of nice chargers man! I sure appreciate the good info, what publication sources do you use? I can take a pic of the tag off the rear end. Could it be possible that the car does have sure grip and something is screwed up? The car drives great and no noise from the rear or anything. It will smoke that tire like hell wont have it though!! Keep the info commin!!!

Buddy you are welcome here. I think this is the best board in the world... really!!!

just a condition... you must be a new Chagnum 2006+ hater. Some members here are not haters of those Chagnums and they are on a kinda "members cheking" room... LOL... hey that was a joke.

Thanks for the compliment - I like 'em too!  :icon_smile_big:

The info I have is basically the same info Galen @ GTS has. It has production totals for V8 and /6 models and corresponding percentages for each option. As I mentioned in my previous post, the numbers can be a bit screwy, but they are relatively close.

There is no telling what's going on with the differential... it's 35 years old and who knows what's been done to it.

You have a PM  ;)

Seems like a very nice car  :2thumbs:

Very nice job on the 72, it looks great. Was it originally butterscotch? Mine will take about as much work and I'm excited to get to that point. I need to get everything working first ie hideaways, power windows, etc...
