To answer your question Bull, yes.  There is a guy a couple of blocks away from me who is now working on converting his 2nd first gen F-body from a Pontiac to a Chev.  He took a Firebird convertiable and made it into a "pace car" Camaro and got big bucks for it.  The local GM guys went nuts.  He didn't care because he made money, enough money to encourage him to try it a second time.  I think he's converting a hardtop this time but the local GM fans are none too happy about it.
Me?  I'm just glad he isn't into Mopars anymore.  He put a few phony Pentastars on the market in years past as well.

Is he doing this legally or not? It's one thing to create a mutant car (some would say clone) but it's quite another thing to lie about what it actually is and make "real" money on a "fake" car.

well tell ya what if i find on near me ill sell the 69 and get a 68. cool?

I'm going to get some heat on this, but I never cared anyway, you should see my '69 Satellite convertible with it's mix-matched parts from several years.  :D

I'm basing my opinion here on the fact you said your car is in bad shape. Don't sell it because some strangers on a forum told you to, it's only a handful of opinions & they don't count as much as your own. I like a lot of the people on here, as well as respect their knowledge, but if they all ran off the edge of a cliff together I'd still be at the top watching them hit the bottom.

I would probably say you have a good point if he had never asked our opinion in the first place. If someone asks our opinion and we provide it there's really no room for anyone to complain about that transaction, is there?

BTW, we still haven't seen any pictures of this car, let alone a decent description, so we're all kind of plodding along in the dark. I'm starting to consider labeling the whole thing BS and admitting we've been played for fools.

No it isn't legal.  The first time he did it was with a 71 Charger RT.  He advertised it and sold it as a factory 440 Six Pack car which it wasn't.  This was in the 80's and people were unaware of checking numbers.  His next car was a 70 Challenger 'vert which magically became an RT and again, he found a buyer who didn't check the VIN.  But that was in the mid 90's and the buyer should have known better.   It worked well so he next did a Challenger TA.  For that car, he was able to find a set of real TA tags to hang on the car.
Thankfully, he has now turned to the GM crowd for his fun money.  He still has some of the magic soap he used to wash the Challenger 'vert with too because his own car is a 69 Camaro which magically became an SS/RS and grew a cowl induction one weekend.  (which would be fine but given his history, I'm sure will eventually be sold as legitimately having those items)

Bull, technically, he asked how hard it would be to change it from one year to another, not if he should sell it, or what people think he should do with it. :D

I'll agree it makes more sense in certain ways to start with the correct year car instead of swapping parts, but sometimes that isn't the best option. It's very easy to suggest to someone "just sell it & get the one you want" but selling & buying an old car isn't as easy as going to Wal-Mart to get new underwear. If I recall Bull, you spent a long, long, time looking for your car before you bought it. I bet you looked at more overpriced junk than you care to remember. Sometimes we get lucky, but most times we see a lot of cars that should be scrapped.

Same goes with selling. Just 3 weeks ago I had a guy wanting to buy an original '68 Coronet quarter panel from me. He said he definitely wanted it, asked for more photos than I originally took, exchanged many emails, said he'd pick it up, & took up a lot of my time, only to finally blow me off & not get back to me when it was time to close the deal. Doesn't matter now, I have a deposit from someone else, but it's still a hassle. That's also probably why I have so many parts I don't need, it's easier to hoard them than to deal with a lot of people.

You could be right on the fact the whole story is BS, but so what? Someone else may learn something from the discussion & we all love to toss in our 2 cents & argue anyway.  :D
