How can I check to see if a 904 is in working order with out it being in a running car?

seriously though, whenever I buy a transmission I buy it expecting a core. sorry im not of more help.

there really is no way for you to test it without installing it first.

what the other guys say , also you could have a look at the trans fluid to see what condition it is in , if there is still some in there.

pull the pan and see whats in it, but anybody can pour out old fluid and clean the pan. if they haven't though, look for metal particles or chunks of metal or plastic. there will always be a residue of clutch material in old worn trannys though, so be aware :2thumbs: TK

Yep, I pulled the pan and there was just a little, fine metal dust at the bottom, so  I think that I'll swap em and see.  thanks
