How tight do I need to tighten the nut that holds the flange on my rear end? Thanks!

Ghoste

It depends on what rearend you have.
For a 1969 selection, there is the
7.25 - 240 ft lbs
8.75 (741 and 742 case) - 240 ft lbs
8.75 (489 case) - 170 ft lbs
9.75 - 250 to 270 ft lbs

There is no set torque for the 489 with a crush sleeve, the nut is tightened until the proper bearing preload is reached with 170 ft. lbs. being the minimum.
The 742 gets 240 ft. lbs.

Pardon me but my karma just ran over your dogma.

Hey John-------what about the 489 where you are substituting the solid spacer and shims for the crush sleeve.?  Would it be 240 ft-lbs also?  And how do you hold the pinion still to tighten the nut to than kind of torque?  Do you make a plate to attach to the flange and attach a long piece of pipe to it?  Come to think of it, where do you get a torque wrench that measures 240 ft-lbs?  Seems like most I have seen just go up to 150.

Sorry John, had those two backwards, fixed now.

Are we talking about the yoke or the bearing retainer that holds the axles to the flanges ?

Without a crush sleeve the 489 with a 1 1/4" hex nut would get the same 240 ft. lbs. torque as the 742 but some 489 pinions have the smaller 1 1/8" nut which should only get 180.

In the absence of a dedicated holding tool, some like to use a big pipe wrench around the yoke, braced against the ground when tightening the pinion nut. 1/2" drive torque wrenches are available that go to 250 ft. lbs. but the 3/4" drive wrenches handle that easily.

OK.  Thanks John.  I have two different 489's.  One has the small nut and one the large.  I think the difference was that one was 10 spline and the other was 29 spline.  I appreciate the info on the torque settings.

Didn't think about the 3/4 inch torque wrench.  Of course that will do just fine.  I will need to round one up.  Again, thanks.

Nice info !!! I will deal with that soon.
