any good father and son stories out there? this hobby has a way of bringing families together like no other hobby can. lets hear from you guys :2thumbs:TK

I'm helping my son, who is 16, build a car. We were given a 1987 Olds Cutlass T-top car from a friend of the family who lost interest in the car. He planned to make it a 442 clone. This is the last year for rear wheel drive Oldsmobiles. For those unfamiliar with this car, it is a G-body GM, in which Buick Regal, Pontiac Grand Prix, and Monte Carlos are in the same family.

The car is in decent shape and so far we've stripped the carpet and seats out. The carpet will be replaced, the seat covers we've removed and machine washed..they will be reinstalled. The original 307 is coming out and being replaced with a 1968 Rocket 350 we've already purchased through Craigs list. We also have to patch some areas of the floor due to a leaking T-top panel.

Future plans include a new rear crossmember to allow for dual exhaust, a Bowler transmission lockup control module for the 2004r tranny, headers, and HEI ignition. Also looking for a fiberglass hood with a 2 or 4" bulge.

We're still looking for wheel/tire combinations.

My son is excited but somewhat impatient and I have to remind him that these projects take time. The car will look pretty sick and sound great compared to his buddies' rice burners.

hlpag is a muscle car dealership who buys and sells "father son projects" what they neglect to mention is that these cars are too far gone to fix.  They bondo and or paint over the problems and sell them for top dollar. They are ass holes!

69charger2002

go to www.hlpag.com.. read the ads.. the father and son joke has been going on here for years. it's what every one of their "project" cars are called.. BTW be sure to buy a couple of them from them, and also make sure to buy them sight unseen. don't ask about titles either. it will save you the heartache

Father and son projects are time well spent!!  :2thumbs:  I bought my 71 Dart in 2004 off E-bay.  We have been working on it every since.  :pullinghair:  I would love to say it has been smooth sailing all along, but I would not be telling the truth.  It has taken longer than I expected and many problems have come up during the rebuild, but all in all it is something that I will have from now on that my Dad "built".  No he did not do all the work (bodyshop did all the bodywork and the paint, the motor that I ending up going with is a machine shop built piece). But as for what was "father and son"?? We rebuilt the front supsension and changed to disc brakes, changed over to a LBP 8.25 rear end, and pulled the factory motor.  My Dad is the one that took the car apart to paint, put the new motor and trans in, and put the car back together after the bodyshop painted the car!   Is it show quality...NOPE.. Will people laugh at it at car shows... :scratchchin: PROBABLY  But will it bring a huge smile to my face everytime I see it knowing how much time and "heart" my Dad put in it.... YOU DAMN RIGHT!!  :boogie:

My son, Eric, and I have been working on Chargers since 1999.  The first one was the 1969, 440, auto.  We got that into pretty good shape the first year.  We are currently working on the 1968, 383, 4-speed.  In fact, we spent the whole day today taking off the front suspension.  After we get that 1968, 383 done (he will have gained a lot of experience on this one), we will start on his 1968, 440, 4-speed.  Eric loves working on Chargers.

1st pic - Eric and the 1969, 440, Auto
2nd pic - Eric working on the 1968, 383, 4-speed suspension
3rd pic - Eric's 1968 R/T, 440, 4-speed (loading it up to bring home)

Cool idea -

My Uncle found my Dad and I a 71 Charger North Dakota car rust free for $1250.  It's an original 383 car but it had a 318 in it by the time we got it.  We started restoring it in 1999 (I think) after I drove it in college, summer and winter, as it was my only car.  It was a 5 year ground up restoration, working weekends mostly.  We never agreed on how to build up the 440 as he wanted something more stock and I wanted ported aluminum heads and a big cam  :yesnod:.  We had a great time doing it, but lost track of the amount of beer and cigars consumed during the late night sessions going through manuals and determining the engine specs.

It's done and we've been driving it for about 3 summers now. No more winter driving! ;)  And lately I've been bombarding you guys with all kinds of cam and head questions which makes him cringe because he has no interest in redoing the engine even though Neil, Ron and others have given me some pretty good suggestions.  Oh well, it was the most time I ever spent with my father and it was something I'll never forget.

And oh yeah, about two weeks ago at a car show a friend told us of a '68 Roadrunner with a built 383 that may be for sale from a local guy.  I'm trying to get him to go drive it...lol

I bought a 73 cuda this weekend.  My 5 year old has claimed it.  I guess it's going to be his.  We have 10 years to get it done.  He says I can keep my charger.

My son 16 and bought his first car last year. It's a 74 Charger SE 360 auto. We have doing been some work on it. However, I recently came across a 72 Charger Rallye 318 auto car that I was going to buy for myself, but my son saw the pics and really wanted it. So, I told him he could buy it, and sell his 74, which he has for sale, and we are in the process of bringing the 72 up from Callifornia to BC. We got a really good private deal (on Craigslist), and it's a running, complete car, but it will need some work. Looking forward to it though, nothing like working on a Mopar!

Lost Sheep,

The car was purchased around 1994 from a dealership in Dickinson where my Uncle lives.  I think he told me the car was originally from Montana but was owned by someone in Dickinson and eventually sold to a local dealership where my Uncle found it.

My son and I have been working on a 73 Charger Rallye for only a year now when our schedules permit. It came out of SC. WL 21 coupe car. 340 Auto. . Has to be the most stripped down Rallye I've ever seen. It should be a light little runner when done.He wants to paint it Viper blue.

I'm not sure if most would throw my car into a father and son project, but it was mainly the son project of searching and trying to find a car to work on. Me in this case. Well I do have it, and so far me and my father have done a few odd and end's to the car. Mainly just routing maintence so far. However one of these days we will strip it down and do it justice. That is unless I part with it for what I really wanted.

My father and I are restoring a 73 Charger.  We're cloning a Rallye.  We have spent quite a bit of time working on cars together, but this is our first resto.  We've been seriously working on this car for only about a year and a half now, even though we've had it for about 4 and a half years.  This won't be our last resto either.  A 2nd gen is next on the agenda.

Hubby bought me a 71 Charger, but we haven't picked it up from the previous owner yet.  I am really excited to get it home and start working on it.  I will alllow all three of my girls to help me with it.  Huuby said said it is a third gen.  he will not do anything but the engine work on it, so It will be a mom and daughter project!  YEAH!!!!!
