Installing a Blower

I have been running NO2 for a while and am ready for a change. The ntrous was fun and helped me get the car to run 11.403 but at $60 a bottle its time to move on. Plus I love the way a blower looks sticking out of the hood. JR at RBS Superchargers set me up with a Used Littlefiled 14-71 and everything else I need. He is very helpful and full of information. :2thumbs: I am currently installing a S&W roll cage so that I am safe and legal and hope to get into the 10.90s.

Wish me luck!

ps. How do I get the file size of my pictures smaller so that I may post them? :shruggy:

Purple440

Wow good luck sounds like hella fun!  What compression are you running to handle that blower?  7.0:1?

ronv

Well I do not know exactly what the compresson ration is but we are thinking around 9.5:1. The set up will produce about 10 to 12 lbs of boost so we should be good to go.

Purple440

Well I don't know much about blowers, but I thought you needed lower compression to run them...but that's from hearing about guys with those roots blowers.  Good luck with yours  :2thumbs:

post up pics or a video of tire burning if you can

your right generally 7-8:1 is a good idea but, by lowering the boost you can get away with the higher compression good luck and post some pics  :2thumbs:

Blown68Coronet

9.5:1 is definitely too high, Hope your runnin alum heads and thick head gaskets. You'll be limited to run low boost.I'm at 7.5:1

:iagree: The static compression should be in the 7.5-8.5 range max.  :yesnod:

Wow, a 14-71......that's a big honkin blower !  :2thumbs:

I'll be using the SCE ICS Titan head gaskets under the 84cc Edelbrock heads. I am still looking at just what compressed thickness version to go with. Any suggestions? The block is a 30 over 440.

ronv

I think I figured out how to resize pictures so that I can post them. These are of the car, engine bay and the blower set up. I am now thinking that I will do the install in November because thats when our race season is over.

Mefirst

That 14-17 blower is as big as the 440 engine :icon_smile_big:

-Did you add a girdle to the 440 block?

Ronv, I know this is off topic but I like the hood scoop on your car I have a 69 I want to put a scoop on so I can get rid of the drop base air filter who makes yours and where did you get it it looks like it fits really good :2thumbs:

                                                                                    Thanks, Alan

Im looking at centrifugal s/c for my Charger. Can't beat high end power. Im running one on my cobra with compression of 9 to 1 so I do have to run some race gas in it while it's pushing 16lbs.

Well Alan...I do remember it taking a while to find the scoop but I can't remember where I got it from. I'll look it up in the file that I started when I got the car 3 or 4 years ago. Like a dummy I stopped keeping up with the file. :slap:

We're going to start ordering 116 race gas for our cars. We have been using 110. I bracket race the car once a month about 9 months out of the year. I am doing my goal is to keep it street legal and still run in the mid 10's. Thats why the large slow turning blower. I am hopping to keep the heat down.

Update time,
We've been slowly working on this project stopping to go ride dirtbikes, go to Vegas for NHRA and SEMA and generally screwing around. We are in the fitment and mock up stage and are having some issues with the snout being a little too short but all in all its going well. We are also moving the battery to the trunk and working on removing as many wires from the engine bay as possible. I think its going to be a joy cutting up the fiberglass hood that cost an arm and a leg to get here but what the hay...thats hot rodding.

Challenger340

Did you cut another 1/4" crank keyway, 180 degrees around from the stock keyway, so you don't "spin out" the crank snout in the hub ?

Takes alot of Torque on the Crank snout to drive that lung ?

Bob out.

I'd have to say no. How crucial is that?

I would go with 88cc heads instead

IMO, it's pretty crucial.

Did the manufacturer not rec. that you do the extra keyway on the Crank in the Kit instructions ?

How much boost is this thing good for on your engine,(how big is your motor), and what under/over pulley ratios are you planning on ?

Actually this is the first I herd of this. I am only going to have 10-12 lbs of boost.
Thanks for the heads up. I called a local racer here who is currently running an Alky blown 440 in a front engine dragster. He said that the single keyway would be ok because the crank bolt is so huge. Then when I told him of the blower size he retracted his statement and felt that I should ad the keyway. He does it on all his motors. Sol after I get this fitted in properly I will be tearing it down and redoing the crank. This will give me the chance to put in a stroker assembly and lower the compression ratio.

Thanks for saving me some future trouble.

If your current crank is a stock forged piece (1053) it should be upgraded to a new 4340 forging with that much boost. The rods should also be swapped out at the same time....assuming they are stock rods.  :Twocents:

My buddy is running Diamond racing gas ported custom blower pistons in his supercharged 446 with excellent results. You might want to consider a main girdle/aluminum caps for this build as well.  :yesnod:

You're very Welcome

I didn't want to seem like I was raining on the parade, but blowers can put up some "red flags" at times for us, and I was just trying to share.
On the bright side, like you said, now you can redo, and get EXACTLY what you want & expect reliably.

Those Diamonds look great !

Also, check out a "keithcraft" blower reverse dome configuration, with JE tech if your going custom.
We've seen gains, over the other higher radius reverse dome configurations, on alot of SB Ferd Wedge stuff, probably due to enhanced Flamefront propagation.
No reason not to expect the same results from the Mopar Big Wedges, especially with the stock plug placement, and it'll lesson the main hammering on the stock block.

Bob and Ron,
Great info. Thanks for your insigt. The reason for posting this project was to get info from guys in the know like you and to share with others thinking of installing a blower that it can be done properly with out destroying your car.  Now because I need parts and stuff I'm getting on my Honda 450x and looking for BMOTOXSTAR.

Aloha
