Chargers with sunroofs.....

G'day.
Yesterday I paid a visit to my freakish brother in law, another Mopar fanatic, owner of a '67 Coronet 440.
Recently, he phoned me to say that he found a free parts car just down the road from his house, which happened to be a perfect disc brakes donor for his Coronet.
He told me it was a Cordoba.
In fact, after laying eyes on it, it's actually a 1975 Charger SE, which is a Cordoba in drag.
What caught my attention was the fact that it has a perfect manual sunroof, which works just as it should.
So obviously, the price is right.

My question: How close does this set-up come to approximating the sunroof avaliable on the 1969 - 1970 Chargers? And/or the 1971-1974 Chargers?

A sunroof was available on all 3rd gens. The 75 Charger shares a very similar if not the same roof as a 3rd gen.

I think the sunroof option on Chargers started in 1969 (as I have never seen a factory 1968 sunroof Charger).  About thirteen years ago, I looked at a 1973 Charger SE with the sunroof outside Goodland, Kansas.  It was interesting as it was all white (exterior, vinyl top, interior), big block (probably a 400), but I don't remember the transmission type (probably automatic).  That car was a loaded car (all power options were present, AM 8-track still there) with fairly low miles (less than 70,000 if I remember right, been sitting out near a building since the late 70s per the license plate).  All it needed was a good cleaning and a wax job, no rust present.  A friend wanted to buy the car, but just did not have enough cash to get it (I think it was $2,000).  I was not in the market for a third gen at the time or I would have jumped on it......

A sunroof wasn't necessarily rare but it was uncommon.

OK...we've established that sunroofs were avaliable on 1969 - 1974 Chargers.

What, if any, differences are there between them?
I've heard tell that they are, in fact, actually built by Bosch, the German contractor, popular for their sparkplugs.

Sunroofs were a fairly rare option.  What makes them even more interesting is that you could get them as power or manual sunroofs.  For example, I have a '78 Magnum (renamed Charger) with a power sunroof.  I have known a number of people who have owned manual sunroof Chargers and Cordobas.  I have a friend who claims to have (I have never seen it) a '68 Charger with a power sunroof.

I am not sure about 1975, but.....

I did have a rusted out '74 Charger SE that I parted out years ago. The sunroof bits from it ended up in a 1971 Challenger I bought later. It fit perfectly but was a PITA to do.

Barry

moparguy01

it was an option cause I have one taking up space in my car. It doesn't fit with the roll cage unfortunately. so either i install the sunroof and remove the cage or leave the cage.

the jury is out on that one.

UFO

Don't cry fowl on that `68 with a sunroof. There a photo used in advertising that clearly shows the buckets seats with the `68 pattern.

When you say advertising, do you mean "Chrysler Factory" advertising?
In a brochure?

There isn't anything in any of the paperwork that I've seen that says that you couldn't have gotten a sunroof in a 69 Charger 500. The only options listed as unavailable, are A/C, and a rear luggage rack. Which we all know that they made several with A/C.

UFO

True they don't say you couldn't get a sunroof, but a vinyl roof was not available on a 500.Sunroof and vinyl top went together.
