Ever had this happen?

I emailed a guy probably a month back about a 74 charger he had for sale. Never got back to me so I forgot about it. A couple days ago I get a message forworded to me as well as about 8 other guys with "pictures" of this 74(I added the ""s because I wasn't able to access the pictures) and says nothing more about it. Now what am I to assume? he's trying to start a bidding war over this car as far as I'm concerned even tho his 2400CDN asking price is a bit much for a charger thats currently parked with a pooched 318. I emailed him back quite pissed off that'd he'd try such crap and told him off and said I am no longer interested in his car. Did I say the right thing? He wouldn't admit it but come on when you send pictures to like 9 guys what am I supposed to think? I dunno maybe I was a little harsh?

Could be a bidding war, or he might just be lazy?

Sounds to me like he is just lazy too.  I know if I was trying to sell a car I would never expect to get it sold if I did business like that.

I ran into a bunch of weird stuff like that when trying to buy my car. I figure if they can't complete the simplest of tasks without creating a bunch of confusion and misunderstandings they aren't worth dealing with. Some people just can't get through life in a conscience state of mind. If I were you I'd look elsewhere and find a seller who gives you what you ask for when you ask for it, aka, "motivated."

Well, first of all, it's his car.  Let him email 1,000 people.  If he's a money grubbing douchebag then let him be.  I stay away from people who have the flipper mentality.  If he uses cheasy tactics to get more money run away and let someone else get screwed.  Another deal will come along

maybe he got busy at work and when he got the first chance, he emailed you and probably all of the other guys who asked for pics.  maybe he did not feel like putting attachments on 8 emails. 

Tell the guy off if it makes you feel better, but it's not getting you the car and it's certianly not going to change him so what's the point?

I don't see anything wrong with it. Obviously you are not the person interested in the car. If I had that many people requesting pictures I would send them all at once too. It would be kind of foolish to send the same pictures over and over again when you do it once and get it over with. I'm sure its not a bidding war but a first come first serve deal just like any other car. If you feel that weird about it though don't even bother with it. But to me it seems completely normal.

The mass email isnt the issue if you ask me, the reason I say it sounds like laziness is the fact that he waited a month to reply.

meh I guess it was mean but meh. Past is past. I'll handle it differently next time. But I still don't really care for that. I mean wouldn't bug me if he emailed me the day after with pictures and a bunch of other peoples emails but it's been like a month. Same thing happened with this rusted out old pos 68 dart gt my dad and I were looking at. floors were completely falling apart and the quarters, rockers, and fenders were finished and the lady waited like 6 months to get to calling my dad and was wanting 4500 firm for it.

His thought process may be the exact opposite to what you are thinking.
By sending the pictures out to everyone at the same time, everyone knows where they stand and who's involved.

If he had sent them out individually, you wouldn't know that there are other interested parties. He could tell you that, but would you believe him or suspect he's trying to play you to get maximum dollars out of you?

If you liked the pictures and wanted to deal and then he turned around and refused your deal even though you offered him exactly what he was asking, how upset would you be?
You wouldn't know that there were 8 other interested parties. You could possibly come to the position that he used your offer to play against someone he already had on the hook.

No matter what he does, someone is going to be upset that they lost out on a deal.

This way of full disclosure is probably the best way to deal with it.

I think it's an innocent move on his part but I'm a bit of a trusting soul.

A car that is asking 2400 CDN can't be an object subject to a bidding war... maybe to a point, but I've got to think that anyone looking at something in that price range knows what they can afford and may have an idea what it's worth. If someone tries to lowball him with everything they've got, then they've entered the game with a losing hand. You've got to have some room to move. On the flipside, if someone goes in with wallet-a-blazing, they're gonna get taken - usually by one of the other potential buyers that recognizes the fat wallet syndrome and pushes the price up while the seller sits off to the side trying to figure out what the hell is going on.

Sellers don't start bidding wars, buyers do.

And it all comes down to supply and demand. He's got the supply and there's about an 8:1 demand ratio....

Other things can come into play as well - meet his price and get it out of his hair sooner than a guy offering more money but needs him to hold on to it for a month or two and you might just have a better offer in his eyes.

It's all about negotiation.... from both sides of the deal.


I'm not directing these points at anyone. I don't know the players involved. I'm just looking at this whole thing from a different point of view and offering up some possibilities.

When all is said and done, the true value of the car will be known: What the seller was willing to let it go for and what someone was willing to pay for it. Value guides be damned.
