Question about spray paint cans

So the latest in my saga of never-ending frustration is that my can of Dark Argent Silver paint (for the Barracuda grill) from Totally Auto has run out of propellant with over half of the paint still in the can! :flame: I am not quite finished with the main parts of the grill so this leaves me in a bad situation. Is it possible to pull the valve out of the can in some way and put the paint in the cup for my HVLP gun or airbrush? I don't care of the remainder dries out or gets thrown away as long as I finish the grill without thin spots. I bought the paint before I had the compressor and all that or I'd have just bought a quart and since it's nearly complete I'd rather not have to buy more. Plus, they are kinda slow during car show season and I'm a bit pressed for time since I have the car disassembled. Any ideas on how to do something like this?

I'm not aware of anyway to do that troy. let me tell you Totally Auto's paint sucks. the paint is good, but they really don't know how to put it into a can. They should just sell it in pints and quarts, and not those crappy spray cans.

if there's no pressure in the spray can you should be able to rip out the valve and drain paint out of the can. We load spray cans at work all the time and we never had same problem. It probably happened because whoever loaded it, loaded too much paint (more than propellant) or they sprayed out propellant without having paint in there. You're only supposed to put in so much paint.

;)
A nail into the side near the bottom works well. If there is any pressure left it will blow and not the paint. Once you get one hole into it roll the can maybe 1/4 of the way over and tap in another hole for the air to run in as you pour. Fill up the air gun and away you go.
Good luck..

Switch nozzles in the can sometimes you get a crappy nozzles that plugs up

Totally Auto paint TOTALLY sucks.  I had this same thing happen with every can of paint I ever purchased from TOTALLY SHIITY AUTO - - especially the air cleaner orange. . In fact, if you search the subject, I think you will find more about this. DON"T EVER BUY {PAINT} FROM TOTALLY AUTO!! - - - In fact, you're just better off not to buy ANYTHING from them because it all sucks.   I can tell you for a fact, the paint is a COMPLETE RIP OFF.

This is just one of the many threads about Totally Auto Paints....

Silver R/T: My thought was to pull the valve out. My questions was how to do it. Poking a hole in the can may be simpler.

Winged 1: I ran into a local body shop guy last night and he also mentioned poking a hole in the can. I got the obligatory warning about making sure it was truly out of propellant first. ;)

Lee: Unfortunately, it is NOT a clogged nozzle. That was the first thing I tried.

Tufcat:
1. I already bought it so it's too late to avoid them.
2. Who else makes the correct dark argent (not the light silver stuff)?

I have five different colors for various projects and they all seem correct so far. However, this is the first can I've tried to use extensively so if they all do this I'll be really ticked. I'm heading over there now so if I look a bit darker and somewhat sparkly tomorrow you'll know what happened. :D

Troy, does your air brush gun hold a few ounces at least? If so, use that for finishing your grille vs. HVLP gun, you'll most likely waste that little extra in it vs. a air brush gun. PPG and Dupont make a sprayable grille paint out of a rattle can also. Not sure what brand of paint you are using right now.

it was from totally auto which means it was probably rebadged krylon. haha

That's certainly a possiblity (but why would they also switch to crappy nozzles?). They have a color that I've read is very close to what I needed - and half the price. I also learned this eight months after I bought the paint.  :eyes:

I have a 2oz cup for the airbrush. I was mainly worried about the size of the metal flakes clogging it up. I have a "primer" tip for the HVLP gun and thought that may be better. I'll try the airbrush first.

The bugle sounds the charge begins. But on this battlefield no one wins.

I would contact Mike Voth from Alltrim Plus in Oregon.  He did the work when I had the grille of my 72 Charger Rallye (in the correct dark argent).  He's not the cheapest.... but VERY good.
