My head lights flash on and off. On my 1969 chager and I can't figure it out.  I tested all the lwires and they seem good.  Could it be the switch or a bad ground that moves around and makes a brake in the connection.

Nacho-RT74

I'm toward to bad ground on radiator support, where the complete front lighting takes the ground
Venezuelan RT 74 400 4bbl, 727, 8.75 3.23 open. Now stroked with 440 crank and 3.55 SG. Here is the History and how is actually: http://www.dodgecharger.com/forum/index.php/topic,7603.0/all.html

Yep.  I'm an electrical numbskull but that screams bad ground to me too.

I had an alternator that had a short in it once and consequently over charged like crazy.  It caused my headlights to flash off and on.  :Twocents:

Charger-Bodie

its likely a ground but it also could be the dimmer switch............i had one act up on me once , i was sixteen and meeting a cop ,needless to say it took a while to explain that one.

I tried the grounds they check good.  On the dimmer switch what do I look for and do?

I had the same prob and the old headlight relay was faulty,i did the headlight relay upgrade and fixed it.

Do the lights flash off and on in both low and high beam? What is the time interval between flashes?

The bulkhead connector is the source of many lighting problems.
Pardon me but my karma just ran over your dogma.

RAWPWR

mine have done that many times, a hard stomp on the dimmer, on the floor and the light stay on. I've needed to replace the dimmer for years now. I always forget about it until I'm caught at night when I need the lights on  :brickwall: then I get the reminded that I have not fixed it yet! But look at that first.

what is the time interval betwen flashing is it the same or just random, thats the answer to the problem.

Mean 318

My money is on dimmer switch! It will do that and then it gets worse over time. It costs maybe $10.00 and is an EASY FIX! Even if it ain't it I would just replace it so you done get stuck on the side of the road one day because of it :Twocents:

Highway by the Sea

Mine did that too, then I replaced the dimmer switch.  It worked for two days, then resumed its old flashing again.  So I replaced the headlight switch, and that did the trick.  It still works to this day (I mean night!)

beenaround

I had the same problem in my 69,it turned out to be a bare taillight wire rubbing on the trunk floor. It caused the circuit breaker to open in the headlight switch.

The headlight switch has a thermal protection inside the switch.  If the current draw is too high or the switch thermal strip's points are worn it causes the thin bimetalic strip to raise and removes power to your lights.  Cools down makes contact lights come on switch heats up. Points open. Lights go out. Over and over and over and over.
If youve tried everything else.... Replace the switch
Option B. remove switch. Take the back off. clean contacts. Reclose and test.
Option C. Unadvised but I've seen some people solder the points together.
I'll post some picks now.

lilwendal

Its usually the headlight switch but make sure that its not thermal protecting because you have a high current draw on the headlights.
A corroded or poor connection at the bulkhead or any other connector will also cause this.

lilwendal

Here you go.  At the top you see the bimetalic switch.  Thats whats opening and closing causing your headlight flash.
Hiope this helps,  MIke

I had my 67 out last night and it started doing this but only with the highbeam on. I've had to play with the light switch to get the dash to light up for a while now. It's very touchy.

Guess it's time for a new headlight switch, huh?

darrin75

no, just do a headlight upgrade and you will be fine?  All can be done for about 10-13 bucks? :2thumbs:
