for starters, rough 'em up and black wrinkle paint them.  with an orange block, it would have some sort of resemblence to the later one...except for the dizzy being on the wrong end of the motor.

I am going to hammer the letters flat, then paint them. If that doesn't work I'll cut the raised letters out and weld in something flat.
