Hi all,

Yesterday while helping a friend pick up a 97 Stratus for his wife the owner gave me a 383 HP core motor and a "posi" 9 inch Ford center section. Does anybody know how to ID these things and what they might have come out of? (car or truck) and what they might be worth. I know there are 28 spline and 31 spline versions. I am just trying to educate myself on it before I "convert" it into funds for my project.

The easiest way to ID an Ford Track Loc 3rd member is by checking the ring gear bolts. If the bolts are countersunk into the ring, it is a POSi. If not, it is an open.

Hi,

Yes they are countersunk into the ring gear. I also determined that it is a 31 spline model. It is not a Nodular case. I know that some cars also used the 31 spline carrier. What I am trying to determine is the interchangeability of this unit and therfore it's value so I can sell it and use the money on my Charger!

I think the Ford 9 inch has a better interchange than the 8.75 Dodge but only because I've never heard and of my Ford buddies express any concerns about interchange between years or models at all when it comes to center sections, so I could be wrong... again.

From what I have been reading about them it seems like the axles for either the 28 or 31 spline units aren't that hard to find? But I don't know anything about Ford products. Except that my 2000 Ranger 4x4 is an underpowered, gas hogging, no braking, weak payload piece of.........ah nevermind Escorts were never meant to be used as pickups

That 9 inch third member will fit into any year 9 inch rear end housing. The 31 spline axles can be found fairly easily. Most 31 spline applications were for trucks until Ford brought out the bigger Mustangs from 71-73. Yes, you could sell it with no problem. I would say anywhere between $100 and $250 on the high end depending on the ring gear size. Check Ebay for prices or go to www.vintage-mustang.com.

Thanks for the info. It is a 3:50 ratio. I will check out that link!
