Who can help me identify my rearend...?

Hey guys...

Took these pictures yesterday, and showed them to one of the biggest danish suppliers of Us parts...
He said he'd never seen that rearend before, and that he couldn't tell me anything about it... Shook me up a bit...

I'm hoping that you guys can help me, and I know that the pictures aren't all that great, but I can't get better shots on the ground..

I thought it might be, but I was just guessing...

I'm putting a 440 stroker in it, stroked to 500, what do I need to put on it, and how much money am I going to spend on it...?

I really don't want to tear it apart the first time I step on the gas...  :D

Depending on setup, I'd say an 8-3/4 or a Dana.  More info needed to say which.  For example:
-If you're going to have a strong 440 on a 4-speed, a Dana is a near-must.
-Slicks?  Dana.
-Transbrake?  Dana.
-Basically, if you've got standard to midrange 440 (up to around 500hp from what I've gathered) on an automatic tranny, always be using street tires, and footbraking, I believe an 8-3/4 should be fine.  Otherwise, you should look into a Dana.

Also, don't be too intimidated by the apparent prices of Dana 60s.  The 'stock' car danas are crazy expensive, but that's mostly because they're rare and peope want oem or oem looking equipment.  If you're not concerned with that, just get a good aftermarket one.  A strange or moser with *all new* parts can cost less than a stock one, and that will be one awesome rear end! (~$1800)

Or, if you're really trying to push the price down, with a tiny bit of luck you can convert a truck rear for pretty cheap (~$1200).  There are some who have cut some corners and gotten it done for way less (<$500), but there are some problems with that.  PM or ask if you're interested in more details.


If you can get by with an 8-3/4, though, they're pretty easy to come by and not expensive.  Heck I've got one I'll be pulling out of my car as soon as I get it back from the body shop (to put my dana it :D) that I'd sell dirt cheap if you're in the arkansas area :)

Upgrade to a 8 3/4 or a dana 60 for that kind of power.

An 8 3/4 is pretty stout.  I and several Mopar buddies have them built in our cars.  One even has a 500 stroker that he just dynoed at 565hp.  So far so good on the 8 3/4 rearends holding up.  I would try and work a deal with defiance.

If you want mine, give me a good bottle o' rum & come pick it up & it's yours...  The street value of an 8-3/4 with 2.76 gears and an open carrier is ... yeah, not much :)  But like I said, if you want it, it'll need to wait 'til I get it back from the body shop... which could be a while :(

Hey..

I'm not at all concerned with going with oem parts or anything..

My setup:
Auto tranny
No slicks, just really wide tyres.. (295/50-15)

I didn't know that you could get a Dana for that kind of money..  :o  I thought they were much more expensive...
I might just go with a Dana then...

About the 8 3/4 you have, that is a very kind offer, but I live no where near Arkansas.. I can't get it to show in my avatar, but I live in Denmark/Europe, so I can't pick it up...  :icon_smile_big:

Those names Moser and Strange, where can I get a hold of them...?

Probably the first one in the list there would be perfect, a strange dana 60 with all aftermarket components and a decent (trak-lok) limited slip for $1700.  Notice that the "reproduction" kits are MUCH higher, even though the aftermarket stuff is better performance.  That's the 'looks stock' premium :D Anyway, last time I spoke with Dr. Diff (cass) he told me a lot of the prices on his site were out of date, especially the brake kits, but at least it gives you a ball park - You'd need to call him to get actual prices.  I got all the parts for my truck dana conversion with him, and he is EXTREMELY helpful and reasonably priced - Plus, the guy knows about everything there is to know about danas. 
You can also get Strange and Moser stuff from Jegs, summit, or direct from them (I think).  Their direct web sites are:

Thanks a lot, now I have a place to start looking for a stronger rear end..

Yeah, shipping will definately be pricy, but I'm getting used to that by now...
I should have spent some extra money on the project to begin with, it would probably have saved me some headaches, and a little  :Twocents: ... Ah well...  :icon_smile_wink:
