I did a nice burnout, staged, launched HARD with my 10 inch slicks, hit second gear and about 1 or 2 seconds BAM clunk rattle. Sideways mid track.(This was my first time EVER on a track as well as my car)
before

after

I have a 9 inch rear with 28 spline hardened axels with GM bolt pattern. It`s in my 82 Camaro. of course it has a 463 inch Big block. Anyone ever have this happen before?
I know that I made it to the 8th mile and THAT WAS IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!. 30 bucks for fuel and 15 to run it. Would like to have at least 1 pass with it. I DROVE it home a mile away goin like 10 or 15 mph!

that sucks... I've never broken a rear before, but then again I'm not as hard on the launch in my cars because I know what likes to break.

Everyone loves the Ford 9"....but honestly it has the same strength rating as an 8-3/4, and a 12 bolt.... get a dana 60 and never look back, it is actually rated at 1220 lb ft  I believe, whereas the rest were in the 750's or 900's.. I can't remember

Happen to my friend twice.
One time like you, the other time he snap the 5 stud and lost the right rear wheel in the rear quater :icon_smile_angry: 400$ of body damage plus a tire and a towing.

He also ran a Camaro, is was a 87 Iroc mod with a 355. That thing was a tork monster! :o Was a very wwell built car!

Happens more often than you think. I'm an announcer at Interstate Dragways in Sabin, MN, and i've seen that at least 2 times in the last 2 years. In fact just the other weekend a 1978 chevy malibu did that, same spot as your axle actually, they had just put their dirt track engine from their wrecked roundy round car into this malibu to go dragracing. but the guy didn't know what to do so the drivers side wheel and axle started coming out and was hanging about 3 feet and he's still goosing the throttle  :brickwall: he got it stopped so it was just interesting removing him off the dragstrip without being on the track and loosing fluid. I assume yours was a similar deal. At least you didnt get introduced to the wall, so I'd be counting my blessings.....and buying a stronger set of axles. :2thumbs:

Yep. Been there.  68' El camino SS 396, muncie M-22, 12 bolt 4:10 posi.  Took a huge dump. Ate the axes and found chucks of what was left of the spider gears.  Just part of it. :yesnod:

I didn`t loose any fluid or anything. My "locker" is still good as well as my gears. It was just the axel. I know it was a aftermarket one as it is  a Ford axel with a Chebby bolt pattern. It isn`t a re-drill. I am VERY greatful I didn`t hit the wall. It was just like having a blowout at 70 mph.

Never happened to me, but then I've never owned a GM product. Is this still www.dodgecharger.com?

I destroyed a 7 1/4 rear end in my old 68 coronet with a 273 motor...  I never opened it up to see the damage though, just swapped it out for an 8 3/4.

speaking of which, I have to say, regardless of what it is going into, and not referring to modified... if I was going to put a rear axle behind any race engine, especially drag between the big 3:
ford 9"
chebby 12-bolt
chrysler 8-3/4

I would definitely choose the 8-3/4

Sorry for the Chevy post. I can`t find anyone to trade me for another mopar.  :shruggy: The rearend was under it when I got it. I only have 1,500 into the damn thing. (after doing a bunch of trading)have receipts for 6,500 for the engine, 1,300 for the trans, 600 for the radiator, 3,500 for the rear and a bunch of misc receipts. Again sorry to bother.

That's alright kickgas, I think the rule here is you get to post up 3 brand X questions.....any more after that, you get strung up by the 'nads!  ;)

Big Lebowski

Look on the bright side, you got enough HP to break a rear end. Everybody can't say that, it's like a 500 hp club. :D
