Apparently he missed the memo about them reproducing them currently in many sizes for around 200 a tire. correct stampings and everything are on them too. we installed them on a 70 nova SS at work.
"rarer than hens teeth" bah. what a tard.

I hope the guy can sell them though, sounds like he really needs that operation to remove his head from his #**. (see troy, I took care of it  :nana: )

IowaCharger69

Sell them? He already has 31 bids. I thought the Areo car guys were made of money. Those corvette guys are nuts.

moparguy01

reserve isnt met though. those plastic nova guys are crazy. they make us mopar guys look normal.

As soon as I read the title of this thread I thought "The 'vette guys have been paying that for many years now for proper tires." And lo and behold, a set of 'vette tires. Depends on what you're into and the amount of coins you have to toss around.

Sure, a set of four tires is a great conversation piece when you bring a chick back home?  Even a Barry White CD and some Rufies wouldn't help these dweeb. Those tires are probably stacked up next to his Battlestar Gallactaca collection, and his (Dad's collection) of porno mags from the sixtys. Hoepfully he WILL sell them for 10 grand.....and get "lucky" for the first time   :smilielol: :smilielol: :smilielol:

I guess all the people who bid on them 31 times missed the memo too. :shruggy:

I put a set of 2000 C5 Corvette rims on a '96 Trans Am I used to own.  It looked great but I couldnt find tires for less than $1200 because it was a "Corvette only" size.   :brickwall:

Not my thing either, but I've seen a set of tires suitable for a Hemi Daytona or similar in the same price range.

It is all about the date codes on them.    Repro tires have the DOT stamp on them.

When you get to that level of concours judging,  some people will go to the mat to wrestle for a set of tires like that.

Reproduction rarely, if ever compares to NOS.  That's just the way it is.

IowaCharger69

Is the "DOT" a relief taken out of the tire? Or is it raised so that you could take a flat razor and carve it off?

69_500

I would agree with Doug on this one. I've seen people shell out big money just for a date coded space saver spare to put in their cars to show, or be judged. There is a huge difference in origional, and reproduction. Even if it has the same DOT stampings its still not the same. One of these day's I'd love to go to that kind of a level on a car, that I'd want to put a set of tires like  that on it. For now though I'll let others do it.

It's raised.  But the repro tire will still have a non-DOT format serial number (date code).   Even if you could remove the letters, the fake tire would be spotted just as quick.

Again, at that level, if you want to play the game, and those tires are what separates your car from the others, it's what you have to do.    Those tires will not ever see a mile on the open road.

As a Corvette guy who's had a car judged at many NCRS (National Corvette Restorers Society) shows a few years back I could tell you many crazy stories. I saw guys jack up the car on the show field and put "judging original" tires on the car so they would never drive on them becuase they'd probably fail (but you get 100% originality points no matter what). I've seen guys with mongrammed velour zip-on tire covers so that when they backed the car out of the trailer the original tires would never touch terra ferma. Yes, these are very extreme cases but these are very extreme people who have deep pockets.
Personally my car received the Duntov Mark of Excellence award (the highest award NCRS gives out) with repro tires. I don't have deep pockets and did all the work except for the paint myself.  They do have a Survivor award and that's what these tires on ebay would be perfect for. A $200,000.00+ survivor car surely would look great with a 10000.00 set of original tires, even if they never see the road.....

Cars owned:
1968 Dodge Charger, 48k orig. miles, family owned since new.
Not a Hemi, a mini-hemi 340.

The reality is that in just about any hobby or passion, there are folks who go to extremes.  Doesn't matter if it's collector cars, Kiss, or Star Trek stuff.

IowaCharger69

That is true, on the Star Trek note, that Christie's auction broke many sales records. Honestly, if i had the money and that was my driving motivation I'd spend that kind of cash too.

I have a set of like new (with nubs) Practically NOS Goodyear Polyglas (not repops) & I could not even get a lousy $200 bid on ebay. :scratchchin: :'( :RantExplode: Also his Description said government regulations required the DOT in 1968, not 67. LEON.
