The n code engine is the standard 400 4 barrell. The P code is the HP 400. Not really sure all the differences but there are apparently two different ones.

Also I COULD BE WRONG!!!!! BUT I think the N code 400 is the big car/pickup engine, the P code engine is the B-Body Charger/RoadRunner and later Charger/Magnum/Cordoba  and also the engine that came in some police cruisers.

Yes confusing,
I knew 70 & 71 N were 383-4 and 70 & 71 L were 383-2
72 had M400-2 and P 400-4 (lI almost bought 72 P code 400-4)
above 74 was not sure I had a 74 318 Charger for a little while but kept loking until I found what a I wanted a 71 383-4 N code

You're right on...from 74-78 there were two versions of the 400-4bbl (N and P). One application for single exhaust C bodies and one with the dual exhausts or basically the HP version. The HP version had different a different cam some years. It all came down to application and availibility by state.

Depends on what year Charger we're talking about and where it was sold. The HP was N/A in California in some applications.
