Its normal for color sanding to take a while, yes. You unfortunately can't rush this part of the job either. Depending on how the orange peel is, good or bad, you can sometimes use 1500 then 2500 grit paper to do the job vs. 1000,1500,2000 and finish out w/2500. I use 3m for buffing and the swirl remover after words also. Buffing is an art, but most anything that has to do with body and paint is.
