The president of backpack-maker JanSport, a subsidiary of VF Corp., died Saturday in a car accident.

Michael Corvino, 46, of Danville, Calif., died while riding in his car, a 1970 Dodge Charger, with two teenage children when the car veered off the road outside Danville, according to an Associated Press story. The driver's side of the car struck a tree and Corvino was killed.

Corvino and the teenagers, his daughter and her boyfriend, were wearing seatbelts at the time, the California Highway Patrol reported.

Corvino had been president of San Leandro, Calif.,-based JanSport in 2004. He had worked for Greensboro-based VF (NYSE: VFC) for 15 years.

"Mike had an infectious smile and laugh and was a dear friend to many at VF, and we will miss him more than words can convey," VF CEO Mackey J. McDonald said in a written statement.

Dave Gatto, president of VF's Outdoor Coalition, will oversee the JanSport business until a new president is named, VF's statement said.

DANVILLE -- A witness to the Saturday crash that killed JanSport President Michael Corvino saw his 1970 Dodge Charger veer out of control and strike a tree after he accelerated, according to the Highway Patrol.
Investigators are matching witness statements with marks the car left on the pavement after Corvino turned onto Camino Tassajara to go west from Creekview Place, according to the CHP.

At least one witness heard the Dodge accelerate. "The sound matches what the car did," said CHP spokesman Steve Creel. The car skidded to the right and back to the left off the roadway. The driver's-side door struck the tree, then the car spun off and landed on a sidewalk adjacent to the road, Creel said.

Officers also are reconstructing the 24 hours before the accident, a standard procedure, and will inspect the vehicle for any mechanical problems, if any, Creel said.

Corvino died at the scene of the 5:25 p.m. accident. Injured were one of his two daughters, Alexandra Corvino, 16, and her boyfriend, John Shaner, 16, of Danville. Both were treated for minor injuries at John Muir Medical Center in Walnut Creek. All wore seat belts.

Corvino played high school football in Pennsylvania and went on to star as a linebacker at the University of Maryland, where he set a school record for career sacks. He played professionally for the Washington Federals in the United States Football League from 1983-85.

Corvino worked for VF Corp. for 15 years, moving his family to the Bay

Area in 2004 after he was named president of San Leandro-based backpack company JanSport.
"Mike was a talented and professional leader and inspired everyone around him," said VF Corp. chairman and CEO Mackey McDonald in a statement Monday. Corvino held several positions with VF Imagewear in Nashville, Tenn., and Tampa, Fla., including vice president for sales and merchandising.

He is survived by his wife, Joyce, and another daughter, Elizabeth, as well as Alexandra.

Corvino's funeral was set for Saturday in his native Pen Argyl, Pa. A local memorial service was being planned.

Corvino found to be 0.21 by CHP.  No occupants wearing seat belts.  DUI, and stupid.  Waste of life.  46 years old and no brains.  Waste of life, bad example to teens, waste of Charger.

Chances are too, that since there was a death in the car, the Charger will be crushed and disposed of...well there goes another 70 :icon_smile_dissapprove:

They are crushed due to fatality?  Hadn't heard of that before.  The bucket seats I have out of an upside down  FWD 89 Daytona may have been from a fatality.
