Has anyone bored a 360 to a 408?

Ya my teacher for an Automotive class has a 360 and he said I can have it and he'll show how to setup it up and bored it to a 408 and I guess I've never heard of anyone boring a 360 to 408? How much would it generate for horsepower and I just need some info.

you need the book "how to make big inch power out of a small block" if the book isn't exactly that it is really close. It talks that in theory you could have a 472. you don't bore the engine out to that though, you bore it about .060 and stroke the rest with a 4in crank, some rods. that sort of thing. even if you don't plan on doing that to any engine, buy the book. It talks about LA and magnum engines, which year blocks/heads and that sort are the thickest, strongest. the best ways to help oil your engine, what you need to mix magnum and LA engines together. and a ton of really usefull info that will make it worth the 15-20 bucks you spent at barnes and knoble.

I don't really know anything about small blocks, but if I'm not mistaken I think a 360 has a 4.00" bore and 3.58" stroke. If so, you would have to bore it .260 over in order to reach 408 inches. This would be totally impossible, but even if it were possible (again I point out that it's not), it would require custom pistons and custom rings.

Now if he "Stroked" it to a 408 and is willing to give it to you, that would be a great deal.

I would think he said "stroked" instead of bored.. That is what my brother runs in his IMCA modied, a 360 stroked to a 408.

I'm currently in the process of stroking a 360Magnum crate motor to a 408 stroker. Have all the parts now and am in the middle of the disassebly process. I have the books, "How to rebuild Magnum Engines and How to stroke a small block Mopar", both of which are very informative.

I would bore it as little as possible. this will be dictated by current bore wear and off the shelf piston availability (sounds like you are on a budget, not a good time for custom $$ pistons)

what little you would gain by extra overboring could be lost if the bores are not rigid enough and they won't seal properly.

I made a 318 into a 402, the machine shop recommended going no lorger than 4.00 on the bore.
reasons were cooling and the fact that there was a little left just in case it needed to be rebored at at a later date.

Do a search for Beers 318 to 402 Stroker and the entire thread as well as part list/dyno results are there.

Hey D.B.-You get that motor out yet? Find anything interesting?

Hey J.B., good to see you here. No, Headlee is coming today to wire my auto lift, so I'm waiting to get it on the rack to finish unbolting the tranny. Then I will be removing the 360. I think it sounds like a rod bearing, but who knows. Come on out and see me when you can.

I am thinking on stroking my engine to 4xx cid, would you recommend 408 or 402? What parts will you recommend me getting to do a successful stroking job? Pistons, crank, connecting rods, cam, lifters, pushrods, rockers, heads, springs even which intake and carb would you recommend me, thanks

I ordered my stroker crank, rods, piston, rings, etc, in one kit from Indy Cylinder Head. Bored my Magnum block .030 over, and it came out to a 408. Good thing about the Magnum block is that it didn't require any machining to the block, basically just throw in the balance stroker assembly and your good to go.

someone on here bored their 318 to 408 or 409...not sure who it is, very good build.
