i was wondering how you get a stubborn dist. drive gear out of a 318 motor? I think that is whats cauing the motor to squeak and stuff when i try to start the new motor. right now it is puointing to the #7 cylinder and wired that was but doesnt want to start out come back out.

Kind of an odd one-of-a-kind problem there, I highly doubt anyone else here has had issues just pulling the dist. drive gear out of its hole, just regular troubleshooting will get you out of this one, there's plenty of block metal around it, so prying shouldn't be a problem, try rocking the connecting gear mechanisms back and forth by turning the crank by hand if its attached, it should pull straight so worst case I guess you could drill a pilot hole, thread it, put in a long bolt and pull on that. Not sure I really understand the problem your having specifically.

what im having problems with is trying to get the gear and shaft up out of the top of the motor? ived tried using a couple picks with someone cranks it and pulling up at the same time with no luck. when i tore the motor apart, it cam right out but wont now. i've even tried wobbling it around to no luck.

Plumcrazy

I've seen that problem before

The problem may be a buildup of baked on crud on the shaft under the bushing in the block.  Try using a pair of the largest expanding snap ring pliers you can fit down the distributor hole in the block.  Grab the gear in the slot the distributor shaft goes in then pull up while also turning the gear.

It's not a midlife crisis, it's my second adolescence.

I remember trying to set mine right and had to pull it up also. I remember either turning the motor forward or backward and the cam gear pushed the drive upward out of the cam-drive mesh. Took a piece of stiff coathanger and made a snatch tool and pulled it out. .....j

Stick a screwdriver blade into the distributor slot and rotate it the opposite direction....the oil pump drive will back right out.

did you try a dist. drive gear puller

tecmopar

As Ron stated, usually a very large screw driver in the slot will get it to come up as the gear pushes against the gear on the cam. I noticed you said NEW motor and I'm curious if the bushing was installed with the burnishing tool because if it wasn't then the bushing wasn't expanded and now the oil pump drive shaft is to tight in the bushing. Probably causing your squeek also, good luck.

charger72

where do you get the drive gear tool at? ive tried a scre driver, pick, etc with nothing working to lift it and the shaft from the top of oil pump.

heres a picture of the gear that is stuck.

Looks like it may have a rust issue ?

Is this an old engine ?

it is only from being humid. It is a rebuilt motor with the original drive gear. just the gear itself is rusty looking, but not flaking.

If this is a new motor I would suspect that whoever installed the bushing in the block didn't properly size it.

Was the gear/shaft hard to install?
Pardon me but my karma just ran over your dogma.

charger72

it was kinda a pian to go into the motor.
Would that tool work? It looks as it fot is for small engines or air cooled.

Roadkill74 SE

how about putting some WD-40 into it and wait a while then try heating the block up with a torch and then try the screwdriver

Challenger340

I did this once, it worked.

3/8 redi-rod,( threaded rod), about 18" long, used heat and formed a small hook on the end, that would fit down under the gear. Then I clamped on my dowel puller slide hammer, and used it to pull the gear.
I dunno if you have access to, or can borrow a dowel puller slide hammer, but if you can, it's a thought.

Either way, once the gear is out, it looks like you may have to remove the bushing, and size it to fit the Dist. Shaft prior to re-installing it as John_Kunkel stated.
Not an easy task on an assembled engine.

Bob out.

Try rotating the engine over by hand and see if the gear is moving....it should be. You might just have a little bit of flash rust on the gear/shaft that will break free. I would also try to hit it with some PB blaster lube to loosen things up a bit.  ;)

Once it's moving freely you should be able to back it out by turning in the opposite direction as i mentioned above....using a slotted screwdriver. Good luck !
