I need a welder

Alright. I need a spot welder to do my new roof skin. I have no experience welding and my dad is a VERY big do it your self kind of guy and is confident in being able to do the job. Now heres my question. Is spot welding a tough thing to learn or will it be relatively easy for someone who knows his way around doing any house project and is very comfortable with tools? Should I rent one or should I look for a nice used welder?

Scott,
Lincoln 135 will do all your welding needs.  Sorry I didn't answer your PM..haven't been on in a while.

cam is in and car is down right now for a melted gear selection cable..moral...do everything yourself.  my car would be on the road had i listened to my own advice.

more to follow when i get a chance to work on my 69.

Life isn't Father Knows Best anymore, it's a kick in the face on a saturday night with a steel toed grip kodiak work boot and a trip to the hospital all bloodied and bashed.....for reconstructive surgery. But, what doesn't kill us, makes us stronger, right?

I've seen them brand new for around $450. Maybe you could find a used one though?

Miller makes real good welders.  I see that they have changed their linup but the small one is the 140.  I think it plugs into 110 and is $619 from brwelder.com.  I don't know much about other brands but the Miller welders use an aluminum feed mechanism instead of plastic which can sometimes melt.  And parts for Miller welders will always be available.

Thanks for the info, I would like to get a welder and do some practicing.  I just got MM Magazine, congrats Harlow, on the young gun article.  I would love to have one of my cars published! just cool!

I've seen new repro roofs put on using the newer 2 part body panel epoxies.   Of course this was on a 67 camero awhile back... but it worked and worked well.

Cudaken used to recommend the epoxy for panel replacement anyhow because he figured the heat from welding caused hidden rust.  :Twocents:
