super hot headers

i have a completly rebuilt 440.  i have close to an hour of run time on it with about 5 to 8 degrees of tinming at 700 rpm with no vaccum advance.  i also have the 1 7/8 primary tti headers.  so my problem is after about two minuestes of run time (give or take) the headers are ridicuosly hot, to hot to touch and will make water sizzle.  is this normal?

I would say usually within the first 10 to 15 seconds or even before that hedders get too hot too touch. If they are glowing red hot then I would be concerned.

Yep, headers are very hot after only a few seconds (definitely can't touch them).  chargerbr549 is right, you don't have a problem unless they are glowing red.

   What are your cam specs? You have very little lead timing at idle. The general rule is, the larger the cam, the more timing. If you have late timin with a large cam, the fuel charge will burn in the exhaust instead of the combustion chamber. If you are running close to a stock cam then you are alright.
     Now that I have made much more of an issue out of nothing, over all, it sounds like the normal headers are very hot thing. Thats normal.

I had glowing exhaust manifolds once...     it was 1300* ish...    that is when you should be concerned...    nomal headers are 600-800* range

My understanding is that if the timing isn't high enough, you'll be burning some fuel in the headers rather than the combustion chamber.  Try 12-15 degrees initial advance and see what happens.  What are your cam specs?

Also, my 440 started like crap with your current timing.  I'm at 13 initial now and it will start great with a pump or two.

I agree with Purple , you need more initial timing

 :iagree: If the timing is retarded the unburned fuel will ignite in the header/ex. manifold and heat them up. Try dialing in more timing at idle....at least 10-12*.  ;)

my cam is a small 4.25 lift isky cam with 1.5 rockers.  so what shhould my intial timing be at with no vaccum advance and what rpm should i set it at.

Well I can tell you that when I go over 900rpm idle it starts to hint at dieseling so I'd stay between 700-900rpm IMO.

What's the cam duration @.050?  I'm asking because the more duration you have the more initial advance it likes, according to the guru's around here.  Mine is 230@.050 and at 15 initial it's pretty sweet but I back it down to 13 to keep the total timing down.

my exact cam specs are int/ex.  at .425

valve lash hot .ooo

adv duation 256 degrees

.050 duration 202 degrees.

lobe center 112 degrees

You should be able to get away with less idle speed and timing then.  Have you tried 10-12 yet?  That sounds about right to me.  Set the idle as low as you like then put it in drive and hold the brake and see if it drops too low, then adjust it up if needed...that's what I do.
