Daddy ran whiskey in a big black dodge
bought it at an auction at the masons lodge,
Johnson County Sherriff painted on the side,
just shot a coat of primer then he looked inside,
well him and my uncle tore that engine down,
I still remember that rumblin' sound.....

I believe the last car was your all time record for length of ownership as well IIRC?

The six years with the Charger is a personal record.

Okay guys, it's pretty much a done deal at this point, so here's the scoop on the GTX.

When I first made the decision to sell the Charger, I told myself I would try to step away from the hobby for a few months wait for inspiration to find me. Well, I didn't have to wait long. As soon as I had a firm offer on the Charger, I started looking.

I had lots of ideas bouncing around in my head, but I finally decided to focus my search on a '71-'72 Road Runner or GTX. I wanted to find a work in progress that I could get into at reasonable cost and work on for the next few years while driving it.

Coincidentally, I have an friend (Chuck) who was looking for the same model.  He was looking for more of a complete show car, ready to take the field.

Last weekend I get a call from a mutual friend, "Chuck just brought home a '71 GTX and wants you to come take a look at it."

So we haul ass up to Chuck's place, and sitting in the garage is this amazing Curious Yellow '71 GTX.  :drool5:

Without getting into too much detail, I need to preface the rest of this post and give a little more background on Chuck. Chuck has owned some pretty amazing cars. His cars have finished in first place at Mopar Nationals on a couple of occassions. His cars are detailed to the extreme. He is a fanatic.

He is also a bit fickle.

Long story short, buyer's remorse hits HARD and he decides the GTX isn't the right car for him. He want's to sell it.

We spend a good 30 minutes or more trying to convince him to keep the car, at least for a little while, and see it if grows on him.

Meanwhile, I'm standing there with money all but burning a hole in my pocket after selling my Charger and this GTX is growing on me in a big hurry.

"Chuck," I say, "before you do anything crazy, take some time and think about it." "But if you do decide to sell the car, give me a call."

The following day I get the call, "Make me an offer."

So at this point I'm faced with both moral and financial dilemas.

I work through the moral dilema after several conversations with Chuck. He has made up his mind about the car, and he has the opportunity to sell it to someone that will appreciate it more than he. So in that respect, I guess we both win.

Financially, while I had previously decided to reduce my investment in the hobby, I realize opportunities like this don't come along very often.

One other reservation I have is that this isn't the caliber of car that typically interests me... it's too nice. I like to drive my cars... A LOT. This car looks as if it's never seen rain. You could flip it upside down and eat off the bottom.

At the same time, there are just enough little issues with it that it's not an 100 point show car. It's got some paint chips, and thin paint in spots. The bodywork is ever so slightly wavy. In a lot of respects, this car is ready to hit the road.

Bottom line, I decided I'd rather chance regretting buying this car, than regretting NOT buying this car.

The auction description pretty much sums it up, so I'll spare you the details here.

I've already got some future plans in mind, starting with disc brakes. I also think the car is a great candidate for a Passon Performance OD gear set.

But before any of that, I'm going to DRIVE this sucker. It needs to get soiled.

Unfortunately, as luck would have it, the car ate it's fuel pump pushrod the other night. Before I can take possession, we need to fix that issue. I hope to take care of that tomorrow night.

For a brief period, the two cars will share garage space (assuming no one gets cold feet in the next 48 hrs). I will avoid being Mopar-less.

The Aquamax...yes, this bike spent 2 nights underwater one weekend. (Not my doing), but it gained the name, and has since become pseudo-famous. :)

So me and a buddy went to replace the fuel pump pushrod and drive the GTX home tonight.

Got the rod replaced, but discovered a broken alternator bolt upon reassembly. It's the bolt that screws into the head. Lacking the proper tools (a right angle drill and an EX-out) and running out of time, we decided to come back later.

We did fire the car minus the alternator just to make sure we had fixed the original problem.

Tomorrow night I think I'll just utilize my AAA membership, call a flatbed and get the car home to my garage. Here I can fix the problem at my leisure.

On the bright side, we did complete the transaction. The car is mine!

I also spent some time with the Charger, cleaning out some personal belongings, and loading some spare parts in the trunk. I definitely have a heavy heart right now.

If it helps, I showed Pete the pics tonight of the car and he is really excited about seeing it.  He's happy for you and thinks it's an incredible car from the pics and that you are going to love it.
