I'll have to say that this looks a lot better than the pics of the new Camaro that I've seen.
I love the smell of nitro in the morning.

I dunno, it looks like it's based off a new camaro body & frame, meaning it could be built on the same assembly line (meaning cheap), which seems to be most mfg's biggest criteria nowdays...
It could happen.

Drache

did anyone else see the magazine article on how they found the original trans am from smokey and the bandit and burt reynolds bought it and restored it or something like that? I wasn't really paying attention when I quickly looked over the article.

That is what I thought.

I love Trans Ams. I even considered a trade a year or so ago for one, for my Charger, but this new car stinks.

To me it looks like a Mustang butt with a sunfire nose. But I think that Firebird fans will be happy just to see the return of their car.

That's not a trans am, this is

In the article it says that it would basically be a reskinned Camero.  Isnt that what the 1st gens were also?
:shruggy:

Yes i know i spelled Camaro wrong, i do it on purpose because it bugs the crap out of my Chebby guy friends.

In this case, that might be a good thing.  :Twocents:

I think that drawing is pretty good. I'm just not crazy about the treatment of the back pillar/quarters -- too much like a Mustang (not that that's bad, just don't like it on this drawing). I think it needs a lot more work, and overall it seems a little common-import-like, but I certainly wouldn't say it's ugly.

It has a decent sized front end on it with appropriate proportions, styling, and physical characteristics that seem to suit the application and name. There's no mistaking that nose for anything but Pontiac. It's only got 2 doors and it has some styling that is appropriate IMO  - but could be better in the back half.

Certainly more flare than the modern GTOs. Those are incredibly boring style wise IMO - and almost a more extreme re-application of a name vs. "another car" name that was recently reborn.

I think the new Camaro concept is great.

Here's a Trans AM version of the Camaro - I like this MUCH more than the drawing above.

Ghoste

Now that version I like much better.

I actually like that flavor better than the Cramaro (<-- I like to do it that way :icon_smile_tongue: ) prototype.

In the current issue of Hot Rod, there's a story of Year One's project making a bunch of "Bandit" T/A's...but with modern drivetrains & suspensions. Something to do with it being the 30th anniversary of the movie.
Kinda cool. :coolgleamA:

I scanned a few pages...

The Aquamax...yes, this bike spent 2 nights underwater one weekend. (Not my doing), but it gained the name, and has since become pseudo-famous. :)

Damn, those are bad ass "Snowflake" wheels they are putting on those cars.

Thanks for the pictures.

IMHO it's very ironic that GM decided to quit the Firebird/TA right now.
That car is just about the only case where GM's current "angry kitchen appliance" styling might actually work acceptably.

And the "screaming-chicken/70s/Burt-Reynolds" image that they're trying so hard to distance themselves from?
As usual, once GM has finally figured out that something is out of style, it's probably SO far out of style & cheesy that it's ready for a comeback.

Ghoste

Yep, in fact, I'm a lot surprised no one has remade those Bandit movies.

Forza

I don't think it looks too far off. It looks pretty decent but I'd never buy one. At least other companies are learning from Dodge's 4 Door mistake.

Ghoste

You mean like the way Dodge learned from Pontiacs GTO mistake?

Forza

Pontiac screwed up the GTO remake but I wouldn't say Dodge learned anything from them, if they did it wasn't noticed. They sure as hell didn't learn anything about doors.

Mike DC

Oh, DCX did indeed learn from the 2006 Charger.  But they were just too far into the production process to back out by the time the sh*t hit the fan.

They spent most of 2006 giving all kinds of long-winded reasons why a retro car was a bad idea, and then they turned around and started working on the 2009 Challenger.

Actions speak louder than words.

Why do all those concepts mimic the late 70's 2nd gen TA? The concept camaro is based off the 69 model. Thats like trying to turn a 69 Firebird into a 78 Camaro. Totally different theme, lines, profile.

If they want to make the concept Camaro into a Firebird, then they should use the 69 model TA.

That being said, I'm a closet Pontiac lover too, even though I've never owned one.

Id say because the late 70s TA's are the most recognized and remembered of all of them.  That 69 really isnt all that appealing to me.

Besides, badge engineering is what killed Oldsmobile and Plymouth in my opinion.

Me too. If I ever do land one, I'd like to have a 70 to 73 nose...in either one of these color combinations. :)

Or a '77 Bandit T/A. Yep, the appeal was sparked in me mainly because of the movie. ;)
