Those models look great.

Bronze, is that a pre-Duke Boys General Lee back there in the black paint & tan interior?

---------------------------------------------------------------

I keep telling myself that someday I'm gonna buy one of the surviving factory '69 promo models.

IMO those ones from '69 are the ONLY miniature '69 Chargers ever made that have every major dimension & window & scallop shaped correctly.  No others, not even the modern ones, are shaped as accurately as those were overall.  Even the Dukes & Ertl kits that were modeled off the promos are inaccurate because the tooling was altered for the 1970 Chargers & Daytonas back in the day.

JimShine

Mike, you don't need a promo. Buy an old MPC 1969 Charger. They are made from the same mold as the promo. The bottom even screws on the same way as the promo. The only difference is you get an opening hood and engine. The body is the same heavy plastic, the grille inserts are the same as the promo (better than the later GL kit), the taillights have the same chrome buckets, etc. It is the same car for a fraction of the money as a promo. If you want pics of one, let me know as I have one here unbuilt.

pettyfan43

Both you guys are exactly right, The old MPC Promo/kits are THE best second generation Charger for accuracy! The current Revell car is Pretty good, but those old MPC cars are HARD to beat, the current General Lee/Fast and frivolous kits are so hopelessly screwed up, they will never be right again!!!!

You can find builders reasonably, but when you do, JUMP on them, they are getting hard to find anymore. I have 1 68 2 69s and 2 70s.

JimShine

Yeah, you can find builders on eBay for reasonable money. Brake fuid cleans the bodies down to the stock plastic without damage (just takes a while). I missed a sweet 1968 with clear hood recently. They are often miss listed on eBay, so deals are there. You just have to have patience.

Mike DC

That's really interesting, Jim!  I didn't know about that old model kit with the promo tooling.  Just from your pic there I can see the back window is perfect.  What about the door & hood scallops?  If those two are also correct then I'm 100% sold on that kit idea.

It blows my mind that the model companies still produce such proportionally-inaccurate models these days.  Once we had the ability to 3D laser-scan the real cars I don't think there was any more excuse for noticeable goofs.

The shape of the final model has to go digital before they get the CNC'd tooling made anyway, so why do they still start out with a hand-whittled attempt at copying the real car's shape?  A scan of a whole car takes some investment, but it's not like their current part designers are working for free either.

The MPC door and hood scallops are PERFECT, VERY nice stuff, you can also see a lot of difference in the tooling for the interior and seats.

The car is NICE!!!

JimShine

Yup, the scallops are perfect. MPC made the promos. The model kit was a modified version of the promo mold. You can tell by the hood they used the same mold. The bottom side looks smooth just like the promo underside. Even the bumpers are the same with the tabs that run inside. The lower valence is the same too and even has the reverse lamps molded in. Very few details are the same as the Dukes Charger. Its like the GL kit is a product of multi-generational degredation of molds on top of many revisions made between the standard '69 and the GL kit. There is truely a world of difference. I will get some pics later on and post them.

I grabbed a started by previous owner car as it was handy.

When I was in the USAF and separated from my Charger, I decided to make a mini replica.  A lot of the pieces are hand made.  I used the original color (F8) Ditzler paint through an airbrush.

Jim. HOW did you do the quarter windows? I have a 73 S/E and would LOVE to build a model of it!!!

JimsSE

As you can tell by the hood, it was originally a Rallye model.  I hand painted the louvers into the quarter windows.  Before that, I cut out small pieces of plastic to graft into the hard top (quarter window) opening.  I tried to sand down the bulge hood but started to see alot of light where it was getting thin so had to let that go.

It was a blast to make.
