I would probably say 15k to 17k depending on whether it is complete and in good shape.
I used to own a mopar because it was different, but now I know better.

If it's an engine with a vin on it, you may want to try and track down the car it belongs to, that's where the most value will be.  As to it's worth on the open market, just look to the Crate Hemi market for your answer (and not necessarily the MP one).  The cloners aren't going to pay more than those prices for a used engine.  The restorers may depending on how bad they want a date coded or original casting engine.

That's a tough question really and my standard answers is "it's worth exactly as much as someone is willing to pay for it". I've seen .060 over blocks going for $2,000-3,000 but I also know a guy who just purchased a complete engine with two cracked cylinders for $25,000. Of course, that matched his '70 HemiCuda which probably just doubled its value. If the car that the engine came out of is dead then I'd agree with the previous responses. Obviously a more complete engine will bring a lot more money since the top half (heads, intake, carbs, and valvetrain) is much more expensive than the bottom - and easier to see the date codes if someone needs original parts. In order of maximizing your money, you'll get more selling for a restoration than a clone and probably the least amount to a racer.

Sarcasm detector, that's a real good invention.

I posted a link to a craigslist ad here in Portland a while back where a guy had a price of $16,800 on one. It's been deleted but I imagine he got what he wanted for it. It was in good condition and it was a factory replacement engine so it had no stampings.

Does it make you wonder which numbers matching, rebodied, low mileage, all original, ground up restoration Hemi car it's going to turn up at auction in?

Any pictures?  What's the story behind it - where'd you get it?  I would say how complete it is, and what kind of shape it's in would have a big impact on what you can get for it.  A lot of these led a pretty hard life, and I've seen a lot on eBay that have been raced hard, blown up, welded back together, bored out, sleeved, and cracked until they're basically big paper weights.  Is there a VIN stamped on it?  If the car it originally came out of is still around, it's going to be worth a lot more to that guy than anybody else.

I would assume the availability of brand new parts has dropped the price on the stuff that's being reproduced, and B-J mania has probably raised the prices on stuff like intake manifolds and carbs with date codes you can see at a glance, and that aren't being reproduced.

I'd love to put a hemi in my '68, but I'm pretty sure I can't afford it.

thank you all for ya reply ,i will try to track down the numbers , i currently dont have the engine but trying to get it of him,and i will with a heep of persistance and nagging ,, he is gunna gunna gunna , and it is still stiting in his shed on the floor   doing sweet nothing ,,, i am restoring a 68 charger and would love to fit it in mine but the $$$$$ of buying the engine and getting the gear box, diff, and all the bits to make it right, might upset me budget ?? and as i am in australia i might be a little hard to ship back to the us  , but if i buy it and sell it  to some one who needs a date coded engine?? ya never know,
