testing for proper charging

im electrically challenged , but do have a multi meter . How do i check if the alt is charging the battery properly ,where do i hook it up and what reading should i be getting ,...also where should the needle be on the alt guage in the dash when running ....thanks its a 69

you should read 13.2 V across the battery with the car off & 13.8 -14.2 with it running
the dash guage should read in the center up to the C side of center slightly
