A friend of mine at work is wondering what year this GMC panel truck is.  She is in a minor disagreement with her mom about the year. Her mom says it's a 1953, my friend says 54.
How do you tell?  I thought all 47-54's looked the same from the outside.  Any help is appreciated.

Unless the lens system was different in the '50s, the lens would only indicate the year the part was introduced. The side markers on my '85 Shelby Charger said '72, as Chrysler was still using the same parts.

Cool old panel.  1954 had a one year only grille AND gauges.  48-53 are VERY similar.  Different vents on cab, door handles, and door glasses (I think some had wing windows and some did not).  Neat that it is a GMC.

The 1st gen 55 shared the same grill as the 54.

Its a 47-53 (me and my dad are restoring a 1950 chevy). Stovebolt.com is a great website for info on old chevy trucks

47-53.  Early ones had pivot door handles, later ones had a push button door handle.  I can't tell in the pic which it is.

i just remembered (i was tired last night ) gmc never switched to cross grill in 54 so this could be a 47-55 1st series i am going to guess it is a 52 or 53 because it has the painted grille (in 52 and 53 they painted most of the grilles due to shortages in the Korean war).
But the best way to find out if you have Vin is to put it in here and it will tell you a bunch of different info about the truck  http://www.stovebolt.com/techtips/vin/vinbuster.html
Here are a few places that will also help allot.
