70 Charger RT

When I was hauling my newly acquired 70 500 back from Manitoba to Alberta on the weekend, I was approached at a gas station from a guy wanting to sell his 71 Super Bee - 383.  I think I'll head back in a few weeks and pick it up.  In doing a little research on the 71 Bee, I found that some have hide-away headlights while others don't.  I haven't seen his car yet and all I know that's a rust-free 71 Bee - 383 car (so he claims).  If the cars in decent shape, what would it Bee  worth?  Any advise on why some of them have the hide-aways?

Thanks,
Randall in Alberta

I know you couldn't get hideaway headlights with the color keyed bumpers. THis website has a lot of info.  http://www.71superbee.com/

As for value, is it complete? 4 speed? What color and options?

Apparently it's a driver (mostly complete).  I don't know the color, or the options.

I'll try to get more info.

it depended on wether or not the dealer checked the box

If you have no vision or creative spirit, you can always fall back on the way the factory did it.

Hideaways were SE part of equippment and optional on R/Ts and superbees

Natcho, I was told that if you had color keyed bumpers you could not get hideaways from the factory.

That's correct.  I have seen people do it, though.  I personally don't care for the look...

:iagree:

Strange they did it that way, because hideaways and RT lights look good on any 3rd gen no matter what color bumpers it has.

Nacho... Black louvered tail lights (and grill) were standard on Super Bees (and R/T's) with the colored bumper group. It was part of the package.

konigcharger

Colored Bumper Group
Code A54

(N/A S.E. or with concealed headlights)

included:

Front and Rear Colored Bumpers

Black Painted Grille (Std. R/T and Super Bee)

Louvered Taillights (Std. 500 and R/T)

If you have no vision or creative spirit, you can always fall back on the way the factory did it.

Ghoste

I wish the hideaways would have remained standard at least through 74.  It was a Charger feature from the beginning and it seems a little wrong that they began to "decontent" the car in 71 when the rest of the styling was still sexy enough to deserve the nameplate.  :Twocents:

I have never seen a 71 Bee with RT/Rallye tailights. Anybody got proof of this?

mikesbbody

if you want proof check out 1972rallye's cars (click on them for pics) or check out the 71superbee.com website, there's quite a few colored bumper super bee's with the rt tailights.

That car has been upgraded with stuff it originally didn't come with. I would say the RT tailights were added (although he doesn't say that). There are others on the site that said they were added. I'd like to see factory photos or a survivor with those tailights.

JohnnyBee

This one is the real deal. A54 option.

41husk

I was told they did away with the hideaways to cut cost.  If the colored bumpers and louvered tail light option was under $25, how much could they have saved cutting the hideaways?

Wow, just when I thought I knew 3rd gens better than the back of my hand! Been into Mopars for 25 years and have NEVER seen louvered tailights on a Bee, or even mentioned. Thanks for posting the window sticker. I never go by 'heresay' with Mopars, I like seeing factory proof.
