& i don't mean the boss heard ya' making jokes about him at your Mc donalds when you were 16,..
I mean your Corp. HQ in N.Y. laid off 300 folks in an office of 420 and out sourced the work to India...
then reassigned the remaining workers with a hefty pay cut?..

NOt for that particular reason but YEAH it has happened!

Yeah...about 5 years ago I worked at a plant that made automotive wiring harnesses (mostly honda). They picked up and moved half the operation to Japan and the other half to Mexico. They just shut the doors. Left about 250 people outta work. The only one who kept his job was the plant manager who had to move his family to Mexico. It sucked to say the least.

Getting laid off was the best thing that ever happened to me  as far as a job. I went from making $10/hr in a factory to a 65k/yr sales job. That led to real estate investing and early retirement (self employment) Point is, there are always better opps. out there.

I've been laid off many times...minus the "off" part...

And minus the "laid" part, right? :icon_smile_big:

Yes, Brock. Incessantly. I had 6 jobs last year alone. That's just the way life goes around here, though. No big deal. Get laid off from one, go find another... Don't waste time worrying about it. It isn't that big a deal.

Bro, that's one of the many reasons why I bought my own truck. I work when I want for who I want. I was never much of a 9 to 5 kinda guy anyways. It hasn't always been great, but I don't have to worry about my next paycheck.

Its about to happen to my wife and I, we both work for the same company  myself 20 years and  my wife 19 years.  the corporate honchos came in 2 weeks ago and said they are thinking about closing our plant and will give us thier decison by the end of June.

They claim  they own 6 plants doing the work that 5 plants could do and we make the most money  its cheaper to pay $8.00 an hour in south carolina and ship the merchandise to the north east than to keep paying $14.00 an hour in Pennsylvania .
We have some employees with over 30 years there.

My wife and I plan to drive tractor trailer after this is over.  If we like it we will buy our own rig  and work when we want.

Everyone thought it was ok when the Unions got busted up and they sent the labor jobs out of the country but now they are sending the White Collar jobs overseas and everyone is getting upset. Oh well....   :shruggy:

oh yeah.  it has turned out for the best though.  I was hired almost 2 years ago to run a painting company out here.  The guy who owns it is not a painter and bought the company because he just thought he could make money.  when he handed me the reigns it was grossing 875,000 a year.  March of 07 (a little over 1 year later) we hit 1.9 million.  we moved into a new building, almost trippled in business and employees, and then once it was running smoothly he "downsized my position".

I actually couldn't have asked for more.  He was Bi-polar and running that company on the basis of his mood swings SUCKED.  I got severance pay and now I work in the music industry which just got me closer to my passion anyway!

so what happened man?  did you get canned?

Let me guess, is your internet handle on that site "Anonymous"   :scratchchin:               :shruggy:

You could start up your own website.  I assume the newspapers are loosing money to the internet so maybe there is a job for you on the internet somewhere.  Kind of like the old mining town days, when the town dries up you move on to the next town where business is booming.

Or if you want a job in construction, we are dying for Engineers, what do you know about petro-chemical refining? :popcrn:

Couple times.

The first was after 16 years at the company. Compaq bought Digital and closed our plant. I got close to a years worth of severance and was working 2 months later.

The 2nd was 2 years later at a job that I had grown to hate. Left and started my own biz.

Hey man its never too late.  Im just starting college at 26 after trying many different jobs and even a couple years in the Army.  I finally decided I better get with it if I ever want to make any decent money.  Oh and as for no calculators in math class...  thats BS  :P  We use them everyday in my Algebra class.  I thought I would fail this one and im 1/3 of the way through the class so far with an A... 103%  :2thumbs:

You could go to work for the Discover Channel and document the building of this bridge   http://enr.construction.com/news/intl/archives/070501.asp  maybe its time to move out of San Fran for a couple years  :scratchchin:  I hear the weather is nice over there.

Or if you want to stay in the Western Hemisphere you could document the expansion of the Panama Canal.  You seem to be good and taking pictures and, well, you are a journalist arent you?

Idiots. They should just hire Moses. He could part that thing again, then they could slap in some retaining walls while it's open & wah-lah! ;D

Sorry you're having to deal with this, Strat. I have my own little idea why some newspapers are having a rough go at it, but I ain't gonna turn this into a possible flame-fest. If you do need to leave, I hope another good opportunity presents itself & you end up happier in the end.

The Aquamax...yes, this bike spent 2 nights underwater one weekend. (Not my doing), but it gained the name, and has since become pseudo-famous. :)

Oooh! Since you're in the land of car magazine publishers, you should maybe check out the possibility of a columnist at a car mag. I bet you'd like that, yes? :2thumbs:
If they're full up, maybe there's an opening at a guitar mag, or a music mag, or...
