& i don't mean the boss heard ya' making jokes about him at your Mc donalds when you were 16,..
I mean your Corp. HQ in N.Y. laid off 300 folks in an office of 420 and out sourced the work to India...
then reassigned the remaining workers with a hefty pay cut?..

pettyfan43

NOt for that particular reason but YEAH it has happened!

Yeah...about 5 years ago I worked at a plant that made automotive wiring harnesses (mostly honda). They picked up and moved half the operation to Japan and the other half to Mexico. They just shut the doors. Left about 250 people outta work. The only one who kept his job was the plant manager who had to move his family to Mexico. It sucked to say the least.

Getting laid off was the best thing that ever happened to me  as far as a job. I went from making $10/hr in a factory to a 65k/yr sales job. That led to real estate investing and early retirement (self employment) Point is, there are always better opps. out there.

I've been laid off many times...minus the "off" part...

Yes, Brock. Incessantly. I had 6 jobs last year alone. That's just the way life goes around here, though. No big deal. Get laid off from one, go find another... Don't waste time worrying about it. It isn't that big a deal.

Bro, that's one of the many reasons why I bought my own truck. I work when I want for who I want. I was never much of a 9 to 5 kinda guy anyways. It hasn't always been great, but I don't have to worry about my next paycheck.

Its about to happen to my wife and I, we both work for the same company  myself 20 years and  my wife 19 years.  the corporate honchos came in 2 weeks ago and said they are thinking about closing our plant and will give us thier decison by the end of June.

They claim  they own 6 plants doing the work that 5 plants could do and we make the most money  its cheaper to pay $8.00 an hour in south carolina and ship the merchandise to the north east than to keep paying $14.00 an hour in Pennsylvania .
We have some employees with over 30 years there.

My wife and I plan to drive tractor trailer after this is over.  If we like it we will buy our own rig  and work when we want.

oh yeah.  it has turned out for the best though.  I was hired almost 2 years ago to run a painting company out here.  The guy who owns it is not a painter and bought the company because he just thought he could make money.  when he handed me the reigns it was grossing 875,000 a year.  March of 07 (a little over 1 year later) we hit 1.9 million.  we moved into a new building, almost trippled in business and employees, and then once it was running smoothly he "downsized my position".

I actually couldn't have asked for more.  He was Bi-polar and running that company on the basis of his mood swings SUCKED.  I got severance pay and now I work in the music industry which just got me closer to my passion anyway!

so what happened man?  did you get canned?

Couple times.

The first was after 16 years at the company. Compaq bought Digital and closed our plant. I got close to a years worth of severance and was working 2 months later.

The 2nd was 2 years later at a job that I had grown to hate. Left and started my own biz.

Sad to hear, regardless.  Even though lots of folks have been there before (many, many in the manufacturing sector as those jobs went overseas), it sucks when it happens to you.

Just some ideas, if you have any money saved up or equity in your house you could start your own business or invest in real estate. I bought my first rental property for $50,000. It was a 6 unit apt. building that was a bit run down. I maxed out my  building supply credit card and fixed it up. Once I got it fully rented it brought in over $2,000 per month. I had the bank re appraise it, and bought my next 5 unit property with no money down!! I had two old cars and borrowed money against them to buy another property. In less than three years I had 9 properties and 33 total units, bringing in over 11k per month. I know it kinda sounds like an infomercial, but after getting laid off from the factory and going thru a bunch of other dead end jobs, I decided that i could do just as good or better doing my own thing. We sold off seven of the properties to invest in new housing here in Tucson AZ. I moved my family 1800 miles across the country from Iowa last year, only to have the real estate market out here crash !!! But not to worry, my wife bought a Salon and Spa business, I sold cars at Tucson Dodge until i got my dealers license, and now I go to auctions looking for cars nobody else wants and sell them on ebay!! I have also made a considerable amount of cash buying items at local auctions and selling them on ebay. Last year I bought out two old Chrysler dealerships of all their NOS parts and made a ton of money selling them on ebay. Say what you want about ebay, but I think that it's great. I don't beleive the hype of those infomercials, about how you can make millions, but I have a freind back in Iowa that has over 5000 old record albums listed currently. He makes enough that he quit his good paying state job. Another freind of mine here in Tucson, searches Craigslist twice a day for good deals and flips everything on ebay. He doesn't work and is paying for his girlfreind to go to the UofA. My recent venture is hauling back 6 18ft trailers from Dallas and selling them locally for a $600.00 profit each. I have made 4 trips and sold 23 trailers in the last 3 months. This is all because I couldn't find a nice steel bed car trailer at a decent price in Tucson. I know these type of ventures are not for everybody, but there are a million ways to make money, you just have to find something that interests you and that you have a passion about. Maybe its selling vacumn cleaners or opening up an ice cream shop, anything is possible. Good luck in whatever you decide to pursue.

Ive never been laid off, however about 8 years ago I had to make the agonizing
decision to quit my full time job.

It was stressing me out for like 12 bucks an hour. So I just up and quit.

No new job, no prospects, no f'ing clue what I was going to do.
But for my sanity I had to leave.

I now make $45 - 55 an hour, have a bright future and will soon start making more money.
And better yet, I REALLY like my job.

Best thing I ever done for my career period.

My advice.....  When one door closes nail that bitch shut and look for the next open one and
never look back.

And another interesting observation about work and the money part. You will make however much
you can convince other people that you are worth.

If ya think you are are worth $12 bucks an hour thats what you will make.
If you think you are worth $50 bucks an hour thats what you will make.

Within reason of course, but you get the idea.

And me personally I wouldnt go lolly gaggin around killing time in a camper.

Get a new job as soon as you can, good jobs are hard to get and it could
take a long time to find something.

So save the cash, get a job, and on your first vacation time do something
extra nice with your saved money.

As depressing as it is, think about all of the people who lose jobs without buyouts or severance...you will get a better job.  My brother got canned after 15 years at the same place.  He had really grown to hate that job towards the end.  He got a new job, a bit less money, but he loves it.

Try being a remodeling carpenter, we get laid off after every job. That's why being self employed is so cool, because you can keep your own work lined up.
The last jack ass I worked for always came at lunch time to harass us. After a 5 min. lunch break, he says "Well are you ladies gonna sit in the shade all day or get back to work?"...So I said..."Oh I don't know, I might go play the back nine at that golf course down there." So he said..."Well that can be arranged" And he did, he..."laid me off" that afternoon.
I took it well by saying..."F U you cranky old slave driver, I've quit better jobs than this. 6 am to 6 pm. w/ no lunch break in 98* mountain air. Go F#^$ yourself." as I walked out.
That's the attitude to have about being laid off, screw them.

yes I was last year. The human resources lady decided I was a "risk" to keep on since I was attending college. mind you that my school schedule and work schedule never caused a problem. nor did I ever miss a day or come in late. I plan on working there for at least 5 years. My boss also asked her numerous times what it would take to be able to keep me. But I had enough cash put away to take a month and a half off, buy my carb and build my trans!
