Was looking through some old car mags from 10-15 years ago. Was shocked to see how many nice cars could be had for around $5k.
Was wondering what you guys think one should expect to get for $5k these days(especially in 2nd gen charger)?Just being curious as to people's opinions.
Thanks!

You can still get some running driving cars for 5k, a guy in Collinsville just sold a 273 67 plum crazy barracuda for $4,500.  I sold it to him 5 years ago for 2k.  I don't believe he did anything but put new rubber on it.  He called and offered it to me , said he already had an offer of $4,500, I probably should have snatched it up, but I don't have any garage space left.

Deals can be had. Some people have never seen a computer, nor ever heard of E-bay. They don't know that the local auto trader will only get them maybe 1/3 of the $$$ compared to the $$$ that can be made on Ebay. Money talks, BS walks.

I'm trying.  Running a body shop and work a ton of hours for just about nothing.   I'm trying to bring this guy back from the brink if you know what I mean.  6 estimates just today...got the fingers crossed.  I'm doing my best, I love the job, don't care about money...I just need to afford to live.
Oh yeah I bought 2 more cars today.... :icon_smile_big:

By the by, I missed you too.

I would love to just hang out here all day long but now I will actually have to work for a living.  I'm trying though. This is my family!!!

Ok, what did you buy? And I know about the work thing, since I have 2 jobs. :faint: Sucks having to be a grown up.

shoot 70 charger is right....my error.  i'll get on topic again.....

5k will buy you junk!

Unless......you get that all too rare great deal.  Won't happen in my life altough i did purchase a 98 neon today for 650. :shruggy:  changed the drivers window reg at lunch and then tore the fender off in 3.2 seconds to straighten it.   those cars book pretty good for throw away.

all anyone cares about in maine is does it have a good sticker.

I thought this car was pretty sweet, but didn't move. There are nice cars out there, but you have to think a little out of the box.

We recently acquired a 1987 Olds Cutlass t-top car for free. Got it running in an hour. Picked up a running 1968 350 rocket engine for it for 200.00. True it's not a Charger, Roadrunner, Cuda, or Chevelle but driving it will be just as fun and you won't have to sell the farm to afford parts.

Sorry I guess I'm OT. I agree with others, 5k for a 2nd gen doesn't get you too much.

98 neon and a 85 chevy pickup.

total for both is 1850.  truck will pull about 3800 and the neon can score 11-13 hunnerd.

5K will get you crap unless your willing to travel the country with a pick up and trailer to go after the deals.  There was an interesting 69 charger that sold on ebay for $4,150 last week.  It had a dana60 in it

$5K on a 68-70 Charger usually won't get you a complete car.  Or else it will be a complete car that doesn't have a salvageable panel on it (including the frames & floors).

If you want a complete, assembled, street-legal running car, with a basically solid body (not perfect by any stretch, just 3/4 solid), then you probably start looking with $10K.

supserdave

Got this 69 for 5k ...The pictures suck, but its pretty solid rust wise, needs a trunk floor, small patch on drivers floor, full drivers quarter from a dent, little bit of work in the back window area, and some dents pulled out of the fender and door on the drivers side.

The good is it has a 440 and 727 all rebuilt, and the eng compartment is painted and decentley detailed (Plum Crazy).

The interior is pretty complete, and it came with a NOS tail panel! Has a mint grille, and nice rust free fenders.

Harlow

I got my numbers matching 68 sport satellite (non running) with a numbers matching 383 four barrel and tranny for 2K. The roof turned out to be swiss cheese due to an after market padded top, but I still think it was a steal.

No Problem. Are you close to PHX? I hope the car is a good deal for you !!

I consider myself lucky, as do others, no doubt. I bought mine about four years ago, and it ain't no trtailer queen, I'll tell ya. But it is what it is and I got it for $2500 and I'm glad for that. I could sell the buckets and all the stainless and prolly get more than what I paid for the whole schmear...and it's an R/T.

Ghoste

What 5k gets you depends on hard you want to look.  The days of people you don't know calling you up and offering a car for cheap because they heard you had one like it are probably over.  You will have to do a little homework and hunt for them and yes, even scour the country with a trailer.  If you are waiting for the deal to fall in your lap or figure that competing for a low priced complete running car on e-bay is the best way, it may take a little longer.

hemihead

With the prices today and almost everyone having a computer the deals are far and few in between. Before anyone sells anything today they search for values on the computer. But if you are patient and have a little luck you may find a deal still.I know of a Completely rotted out 67 Coronet R/T that has been in numerous river floods since the early 80's the guy won't sell. Trim parts are the only good thing left. I know of a 70 or 71 Cuda sitting in an alley with weeds growing around it. No one home. I bought a 75 Road Runner in Feb. for parts cost $200. Probably could have been saved but I needed the parts.

From what i understand $ 5 K will get you a good condition air grabber hood....  :shruggy:
I paid $ 500 for both my parts cars in the mid '80s a green '70 500 which was organ doner for my sb drivetrain for ten years while i rounded up the big block r/t stuff just so so i could have a running car,.. and a '69 SE a couple years later for the black interior and some trim,.. the '70's unibody was a basket case having been broadsided...
and the '69 had it's drivetrain totally stripped... i figgure both would be approx $ 5K these days...

i know i mentioned here once,.. in the late '90s a guy offered me a complete '70 challanger auto 440 SIX-PACK, plum crazy black int.  with the elastomeric bumpers pretty much complete for $ 6K cash... i guess that same car today would be...  :scratchchin:... alot more...
no way i figgured i could split my forces at that point, cause ya' know what happened to Hitler...

Jackie?.. does this mean i'm out of the runnin?..   :brickwall:

1BAD68

I picked up my 68 on superbowl sunday '05 for 7000 cash while everyone else was watching the game and drinking beer. I saw the ad freshly posted on Saturday and spent the rest of the day trying to call the guy, finally got ahold of him at 8pm and told him I would be there in the morning with cash. Luckily one of my friends doesn't watch football so he drove down with me 200 miles.

$5k is stretching it a bit but I think if you are johny on the spot you can still get a decent Mopar for under 10k

Heres a photo the day I bought it...
and after I buffed and polished it...

I see a lot of A-bodies for around 4-6k. Usually in decent shape. Now B-bodies, those are stupid expensive. A guy I know has a Demon and he got it for around 5k and its in great shape.

Nothing but a parts car.

Mike

I bought my 1969 Charger in December for $3500 and it was a 99% complete car with only trunk rust and some minor rust on the quarters. Granted it was in a state of disassembly, but it was all there. Plus the guy threw in SEVERAL extra parts. Like half an extra grill, three headlight assemblies, etc. I just caught the right guy at the right time. Here is a picture after we got it home, cleaned it up, and stripped the rest of it down.

On the flip side to that though, some people have been getting into the 30's on A-bodies too.  OTOH, I know one clown with a very nice 70 Swinger 340 and he figures it's a 30k car.  He took it to an auction not long ago and it bid to 17.5, which I thought was ALL the money for it.

Mike DC

Hey, we all know the deal.  If the car's in demand and you can't build copy of it for less than XXX dollars, then it's worth XXX dollars.
Doesn't matter what an A-body "should be" worth.

(Heck, a lot of people insist that '69 Chargers still "should be" cheap.  They're the guys who've been "looking around for one" since 1986.)

yep those are mostly parts cars. like most people said is mostly what you find for 5k and under. those cars are 3 year projects minimum

I picked this up in late 2006 for 1300$. That price included a full interior and quarter skins. The guy had people offer him a lot more but none of them got the car. Not only did he tell me that, but so did a couple guys that had been trying to buy the car for several years.  I saw the car under a tarp. I left a note in the guy's door that basically said: "You have a beautiful car there. I have always loved 69 Chargers. If you need a hand tracking down parts or if you ever feel like selling it give me a call". He called the next day and I bought it.

Motor was seized, tranny was shot, didn't have floors, needed quarters, needed sheet metal down the entire passengers side, needs a hood, and roof. No power steering, no power brakes, and most the gauges fans and heater don't work. Oh! and the frame is shot!

I think I bought bought somebody's used up parts car parts car. :icon_smile_big:
