                    thanks

Zach, if you don't have a bottle of EOS (engine oil supplement) get one and throw it in with the oil.

I'm assuming that you installed the cam and lubed the lobes with moly paste.

Once the engine is fired bring it to 2500 rpm and get a timing light on it. You want around 35* of advance to keep the engine cool while it's breaking in.  :yesnod:

Run the engine for 25-30 minutes and occasionally blip the throttle to promote lifter rotation....this well help the wear pattern develop between the cam & lifters.

Make sure you have enough fuel to keep it running for the entire time.  :yesnod:

Once it's broken in, drain the oil and replace it along with the filter. Shell rotella 15-40 diesel oil is excellent lube. I would also use a bottle of EOS with each oil change. Napa gold for the oil filter.

Be aware, if you have iron heads don't be surprised with coolant leak out of the bolt holes once it warms up. No big deal but requires shut down and fix leaks.

Remote starter button helps when trying to get the distributor in the right place.

Keep those cam lobes lubed. Make sure you have oil pressure immediately. Did you prime the pump?

i primed the pump and use a crane cams break in additive.  so far i think ill have it down.  thanks for your help

Oil pump turning tool. It is a long drill bit that fits in the hex of the oil pump through the distributor hole. Turn it at high speed until you see oil coming up through the top of the engine.

could i make a homemade one.....

The priming rod is cheap.... ~ $10.00 or so at the dealer/Summit racing etc....

To answer your question : yes it coulb be made using an oil pump/distributor drive. With the camshaft installed you would have to do some mods to the drive to allow it to turn w/o meshing with the camshaft. Basicly it amounts to grinding off the gear portion of the oil pump drive and using a slotted screwdriver into the distributor slot. The handle would have to be cut off so that you could hook the screwdriver shaft into the reversible drill. It's a lot of screwing around but it can be done....or you can just buy the priming rod and be done with it   :icon_smile_big:

BB engines need to be primed with the drill set on reverse....fyi  ;)

No , you have other issues if it will not start , usually firing order , rotation , dist position relative to the crank , or spark issues cause a no start
