im at a quandry?????

im building a 1967 charger.......its not going to be a #s matching restoration or anything , but itll be show worthy.............i want to be able to race it occasionally , but mostly for the street........im building a 440 for it , will i be happier with a 4speed or a727 .....i know the manual will be costly.......and im told that the 727 is virtuallly bulletproof , and ill get faster shifts out of it............if i do go with the 4speed, im guessin the a 833 is the tranny of choice?????im told they put these in everything from cars to vans/trucks....so which  is the best to get.....is there a casting # to look for? or is there little difference between car /truck trannies and gear ratios????any help would be great

dodgeboy67

oh one more thing,,,whatis the difference in clutch pedal assemblies.....im told i have to use a 66/67 bbody set up....is this accurate???or does the year /body type not really matter????

Troy

Yes, you need the 66/67 b-body pedal set. Depending on the year/body style the pedals could be in different places so get the ones that would have been found in your car stock. There is only one 4-speed and that is the 833. Later models (mid70s and on) were overdrive transmissions and most could be found in trucks and vans. You'll need one with a b-body tailshaft (longer) to fit. If you have a console in your car (or want one) then the 4-speed top plates are $$$. The 67 cars used the "Inland" shifter which is not the world's best piece of engineering so to look stock you'll have to suffer. The 727 will handle pretty much anything and will be much cheaper to install. If you want to race then you'll most likely be more consistent with the auto as well. I probably missed a lot but this topic gets covered pretty often.

Troy
Sarcasm detector, that's a real good invention.

thanx troy....my dad says go with the auto....but the 4 speed is just cool to say you have i guess...plus i got one free with the motor...........im not looking for a stock look.....but i dont want to deface it either.....its a 67 charger by the way.............i just want it to look nice and go like hell

There are so many pros and cons to both it's nearly impossible to answer.  You have to do what you will like best and it almost sounds like you would really enjoy stirring your own gears.
Doesn't Keisler or SMS make clutch pedal assemblies for a variety of cars?

thank you mr ghost.....ill check there

If you want you life to be simpler I would go with the auto since it's already set up for that. If you really want the 4spd I would still keep it simple and stay away from a console. Messing around with a correct-looking console and finding the right parts will comprise half the job. Weld in a hump and screw a nice boot to the floor and be done with it. Me, I'm all about simple at this stage of my life.

Runner

if it were mine and i was starting from scratch id do the 4 speed.  i doubt you will go many rounds bracket racing but you will have alot more fun.  if you are concerned about giong rounds do the auto.   as far as price, if you pay some one to biuld you a good auto and then you buy a good converter you can easily top the 1 k price range.

at some point in the future i want to do a 4 speed in my 68 satellite

I have never learned how to drive a slushbox , 4 spd or nothing
The 833 is tough & has many variations depending what you are looking for , for close ratio to very wide ratio the OD

I would do a 727, the 4 speeds can be a real pain to get them set up right. A stock 727 will take a good beating from a 500 HP motor before they will die.

4 Speed for fun, Auto for $$$ or bracket racing.  I kept an auto in my Cuda so the wife can drive it. :icon_smile_sad:
