8 3/4 axle setup

getting ready to put axles together and install and I am curious, is there supposed to be play in the axle (will move in and out once bolted in about an 1/8 inch) or should it all bolt in tight? also is that the prpose of the adjuster on the right side axle?

Yes, that is the purpose.  Make sure both wheels are off the ground, then tighten the adjuster until there is no end play. THEN, back off about 4 notches and check for .008 to.018 end play.  Whack the other side axle end with lightly with a brass hammer.  Rotate the axle a bunch of times and check everthing again.  If it's good lock it down.
