Going into reverse is ROUGH!

When I shift from Park to Reverse or Neutral to Reverse it goes in with a nice big THUD. This is at a 800rpm idle. Stock converter and the universals are good. Do I have a line pressure problem and if so is it externally adjustable? Something else maybe? Ideas wanted.  :icon_smile_big:

I'm no tranny expert, but it could be needing a band adjustment, see if the fluid smells burnt ;)

Ghoste

Line pressure is normally higher to hold reverse anyway.  Is the noise a recent thing or has it always done it and you're just beginning to wonder about it?

TripleBlackGator

Fluid get's changed every other year. The "Thud" for a lack of a better term is a new experience. It does it going into drive too but to a much lesser extent. It's almost as if i'm putting it into gear at 1500 RPM's  :shruggy:

A 727, as a normal feature of the valve body, incorporates a line pressure boost, when reverse is applied.

This is to compensate for the extra friction resistence, in the helical cut gears, when turning them backwards.

It sounds like your line pressure is higher than normal, therefore "much" higher than normal, when selecting rewinde.

It can be adjusted at the pressure regulator "cage", on the valve body, by removing the trans pan.

Hope this helps out.

Bob out.
Only wimps wear Bowties !

Now all I need is a diagram of the valve body to find the pressure regulator "cage". I'll just Google it. Thanks!

What about a broken motor mount?

Ghoste

:yesnod:  Or trans mount.  Anyway, it's cheap to check them.

John_Kunkel

There isn't much inside the transmission to make a "thud" except, possibly, the rear band (used in Reverse) but the change in direction of the output shaft can make other parts react.

Besides the aforementioned mounts, also check the u-joints and differential for wear.
Pardon me but my karma just ran over your dogma.
