What do you think the best engine for my 74 charger would be for the best performance when it's done :scratchchin:
I was thinking of a 340Ci or a big block

Depends upon your definition of "best performance".

Not trying to start anything here, but, just what are you looking for ?

You have a 74 Charger, if you want "Drag" performance, then as stated, no replacement for displacement, and eye candy too boot !

But if your tendencies are more for handling characteristics, theres something to be said for the lighter front end on the 3 rd generation cars, that can be gained, with a stroker SB in a very reliable 450-500 H.P. range, and an added cheaper bonus of NOT having to convert to BB parts(trans, etc.), if your car is already a SB.

I have alot of customers who go SB just to negate the "snowplow" front end heavy driving/handling characteristic, for exactly these reasons, and still have decent SB power with stuff like this;

Depends on your budget too.  How much you can spend can really effect what you run too.  Most 440s are going to be around 500 and thats ones that need rebuilt,  i picked up a 318 for 50 bucks, put 360 heads and a stock cam from a 340 in it and it does pretty good.

I plan to build a 451 stroker from my 400 motor but I dont think its going to get very good gas mileage.  Just depends if you want mileage or performance and how much you want to spend really.
