Ticking Sound On 318

My 318 always made a very faint ticking sound but today I started it up and it was pretty loud and as I give it gas the sound increases. Also, out of the exhaust it sounds like that at least one cylinder is just compressing air. What could it be? Bad lifter. The engine has 82,000 miles on it and is stock in a 74 SE and has oil pressure as per the factory gauge.

You won't know until you take your valve covers off.  I wanna say it's your rockers, but they wont sound louder if you step on gas.  Maybe a bent pushrod?

my 318 burns oil and when it gets a little low ypu can hear a lifter knock. so i would check the oil before doing anything else

Yeah, sounds like lifters to me.

Any remedy besides new lifters?

I put some "Restore" in mine and it got alot quieter.

My dad is against any addictives to any fluids in the car except EOS, so that wont work.

I put some 50 weight motor oil

Why? That won't help the ticking. I have Castrol Diesel oil in it now, and it has plenty of it.

I found out the number 5 cylinder wasn't firing today.

I forgot this before. Anybody know of an easy way to remove a spark plug boot without getting a boot puller. I tried pull it with gloves on and with channel locks but still nothing, I can twist it though.
