68 383-4bbl Charger owners with BS - please check-Thanks

One of the common beliefs is that only 68-70 Road Runners and Super Bees recieved the 335 horse 383 engine.

Through the generosity of several owners and Chris and Chris at the REGISTRIES (this is another reason why they are important), I have been able to document 69 and 70 Chargers, Sport Satellites and other B body non A/C cars with four speeds recieved the 335 horse engine also.

What I am missing is info on the '68 models. The WIW thread of the '68 383 4 speed Charger contains a picture of the BS and it shows the engine assembly code of 709. This is the first 68 Charger 383-4bbl four speed assembly code I've seen. It appears that the '68 383 4 speed Charger did recieve a different assembly than the RR/SB but I'd like to confirm it. So...

If you have a 68 Charger with a 383-4bbl and the BS, could you please check the engine assembly code and let me know what it is? It's found on the second row from the bottom of the sheet under Engine. There could be up to four different assemblies:

UPDATED:

383-4bbl with automatic with A/C - 710
383-4bbl with automatic without A/C - 708
383-4bbl with 4 speed with A/C -
383-4bbl with 4 speed without A/C- 709

I have a 68 383-4bbl w/ac, and the build sheet shows a code of 710.  Is that the code you'd expect to see, or do I have something ultra-rare that needs to get exploited on ebay, ASAP?

The codes are usually grouped together so that would fit in the range....

Mine is a 1968, 383cid, 330 hp, 4-speed, 4-bbl - no A/C.  Build sheet shows 709 engine code.  Fender tag is XP29 62 3 51 227 092989 - 62 in the fender tag was decoded as a 383, 1-4-bbl, 330hp, V8.  3 in the fender tag is the A833 4-speed manual floor shift tranny.  Tag was decoded by Galen Govier.

The build sheet in the WIW post looks to be 709 rather than 706 for the engine code - same as mine which makes it a 383cid, 330hp, 4-speed, 4-bbl, non-A/C.

P.S. were do you decode that number at and what dose it mean?  I thought this was just the last digits on the part number or in my case grease marked on my engine of the part number?

never could figure out what this one was from, first thought it was a 5 but know I think it might be a 3?

My guess is that is the engine assembly number as that would fit right in line with the 709 and 710 code...what's your set up? Is your car an automatic without A/C? Maybe someone with a broadcast sheet will confirm that number.

Some of the 69 and up engine assembly numbers are listed in one of GG's books. You can also find the engine assembly numbers on 69 through at least 77 fender tags on cars built at the Lynch Road plant. They are also listed on the Broadcast sheet. It's the internal plant engine assembly number.

Each engine would have to be assembled and ready to install in a particular body style (A,B,C,etc) with a transmission (manual or automatic), and A/C or not or the 330/335 383-4bbl, before it could be put in the car. The numbers were to let workers know they are installing the correct assembly in the vehicle.

The  numbers changed year to year.

I know all that and have info and build sheet I just wanna know how or why 708 means in terms of this also means 383 4bll auto non ac car for 68 charger? I have GG's books and can't find that number anywere or what the 3 or 5 on other valve cover means?

P.S. now that I think of it the other number might mean what trans is connected to the engine :shruggy:have to look it up in my books again! ahhhh
