Woohoo! Rustoleum paint job progress!

[terrible one]

I've finally got the front end of the Charger painted with my Rustoleum. Should look pretty good once it's wetsanded. I still need to paint the k-frame. Waiting on a front bumper and mounting brackets, and trying to patch together my grill, then the front end will be pretty much complete besides an engine. . . The car should be finished paint-wise pretty soon.

Looking real good! Did you see the article in HOT ROD magazine where they'd read the Moparts thread and then got good results on a Ford Falcon using the same process?  Amazing what you can do with some time and $100

How do you get the spray paint to hold up?  It always scratches and chips off too easily whenever I use it for anything.

thats all Rustoleum spray paint? are you going to put some type of coat over it when its done or just leave it?

You know they make a glitter clear coat   Really it looks pretty good.

Rustoleum makes paint in gallon cans to be sprayed on.  I don't think he is talking about the aersol rattle cans.  We used some on several dirt track stock cars and it was pretty durable.  (especially considering the lack of preparation and the torture it was subjected to).

As for painting the car, the Rustoleum was applied over primer. I did the engine bay with aerosol cans, because of all of the creases and such. But the rest of the car is being done with just a can of Rustoleum that will be thinned out and rolled on, then wetsanded. This will be repeated for a few coats. (just as in the thread on moparts) I noticed that Rustoleum makes a clear coat, but since this is a pretty glossy enamel, I don't see the need. As for durability, the paint has been very durable from what I've seen. I've had stuff on top of the fenders, etc and my nails havn't hurt it either. It also holds up to wetsanding fine. I think that the key to making this paint hold up is the application.

I dont think it looks bad at all.  Id still be afraid of its durability though.  Ive just not had much luck with the stuff.

I used 3 rattle cans on the engine bay, because I did two coats. That cost me $18. And then the can of the stuff was about $9 if I remember correctly, and I spent about $10 on some thinner for it. So that's roughly $37 into it so far. I plan on staying $100 and under for the whole car. I'm not sure if it's going to take more than one can to do the rest of the car, but I plan to do two coats so I assume a couple or three of them. I've probably got about 2 hours into painting that front clip.

Last I knew a few years back you could buy cheap single stage Western Synthetic enamel with Hardener & Reducer for $55.00. Still today you can buy cheap single stage acrylic Enamel with hardener & reducer for under $100. Not sure about red though? LEON.

The thing is, I don't have the equipment to spray the paint on. That's why I went the rattle can/ roll on and sand route.

why don't you rent spray booth for a day, week, etc. Is one available near you. I can buy some sherwin williams paint base/clear with hardener still for $100 or less. It's not problem to find spray booth here at all also. I just sprayed my Cobra hood/bumper cover at work this past friday.
