28!!!!...whats his secret

mild gearing, aerodynamics, and most importantly the OD 4-speed and the six pack...         just for laughs we swapped the six pack set up onto his 68 GTX convertible and drove it and recorded a best of 25mpg...    his GTX has the 3.54 dana with 26" tall tires. We then swapped the entire engine combo into his superbird...     and recorded 28mpg...     so the aerodynamics make a 3mph difference....

The secret ?  the OD trans keeps the RPMs low...    necessitating only the center carb's operation...   so you are cruising on a 350cfm 2bbl....

I put 2 600 edlebrocks on my car and am trying to get it where I can drive it. If I go for a test drive and come back the gas hand moves. I think its about 4mpg right now :brickwall:
69 440 RT matching.. mostly original!

"You want make gas mileage  with 440?  Ha ha ha!  Everybody know, 440 is only for hitting gypsies!"

I took my 10.5:1 edel. headed 440 6 pack, 4 speed, 3.54:1 69 charger on a 600 mile rod run last weekend.  Some stop and go in small towns, speeds between 60-75 mph.  I averaged 13-14 mpg and was pretty proud of that.

george68hemirr

i get 6 miles to the gallon on my 572 hemi with 2 10.50 dominators if i just putt around without jumping into it.....when you have a mopar who cares about gas mileage....just have fun and buy a gas station...HAHA!!!!!!!!!

::) I hate to say it but your boss is pulling your leg. A 3rd gen Charger (which is far more aerodynamic than a Daytona) with a 318 and 2.76 gears would have trouble reaching those numbers.

My Dad's bone stock 66 Chrysler 300, 2 dr hardtop is currenlty getting 16mpg cruising on PA Turnpike on the way to Chrysler at Carisle.

pandamarie

My 70 challenger 440 six pack gets 17 on the freeway going up hill to Reno from Sacramento but thats keeping it a 65mph or under which is hard to do. I do put the heavy springs in the outer vacuum pods for long trips and switch them when I get there. the 69 charger gets 8 in town and 10 on the freeway, will let you know if it changes once I finish converting it into a Daytona.

   440 motors and gas mileage . . . heh, heh, heh . . .

I've witnessed it first-hand  (I was driving)   keep in mind that a 3.45 with a factory OD is higher (lower number) than a 2.76...      the six pack allows only the center 350cfm carb to be used when cruising...      and a superbird is pretty aerodynamic...    dont know how good compared to a 3rd gen...        but honestly...   28mpg - - -   put your foot into it once and a while around town and it is getting around 11mpg...

when i had the stock bore and stroke 440+6 with a .480 lift and adv. 292 duration cam in my 1970 challenger with a 1800-2000 stall speed convertor and 3.55 gears along with 15 inch tires. i got 12 mpg on the highway running 55 mph and around 8-9 mpg in town.

gordo1968charger

if you get more than 10mpg,your not driving it correctly!lol.
68 charger+4 kids=2 jobs

Yeahmate

Hate to say it, but you brought the wrong car if your worried about the cost of gas or tyres.  :pity:

Musicman

I think it's safe to say that 12.5 is a pretty good average for a stock 440 4bbl.

Mike  :Twocents:

I think I get about  40-45 SMILES PER GALLON in town.   :icon_smile_big:
