I found a first gen charger, '67 and it needs a few items. Int. is trashed, can new door panels be bought? Needs a complete grille also, owner of car for now says it has hide a way lights, any chance anybody has a complete grille for sale? No motor/trani' either, but not an issue for me. I have a set of 17x8 Centerlines that I can pick up also w/o tires. Anyone know the back space needed for front/rear? I just want to make sure I don't buy some rims that won't work on the car. I would be into the car less than 2 grand w/rims also, thus being the only reason I'd buy it now.
Positive input is appreciated.  ;D

This site is helpful but for specific first gen info you'll have better luck at http://66-67charger.com/forum/index.php. It's where all us freaks hang out.

Sixty-eights look great and the '69 is fine.
But before the General Lee there was me - Headrope.

dads_69

Thanks, I just joined the forum. I am going back Wednesday about the car again. I may pick it up then, not 100% sure yet.
Hey, you can hate the game but don't hate the player.

Charger1973

Im not a first gen guy but I would think the interior and grille would be 2 of the harder parts to find for those cars.  Not that it really matters if the price is right...

dads_69

Honestly, I hated 1st gen and 3rd gen chargers until I joined this web site years ago. I have worked on them over my 20 + years as bodyman/painter as well as seen them at shows, just driving around and friends owning them also. For some damn reason, I got hooked on them more after I sat in won w/a 383 a while back. Yellow w/black int. Wasn't for sale, but I came to like them. As for 3rd gen chargers, I am looking at won of them also, a '72 w/a 440 Wedge. Its sublime green right now w/black int. also for under 2 grand. I asked my wife, yes I had to ask cause its the right thing to do, she said as long as she gets what she wants for her birthday next month, I can buy another charger. I've been searching eBay for int. parts already as well as a grille set up. I only need the center section the owner says now, head light doors and parts are there. Also after owning a lot a 2nd gen chargers in my past, I got sick and tired of people saying, hey, your driving a Dukes charger. F@#k I hated that comment. I never owned a dukes look a like charger nor will I. No offence to anyone who does here. Just not my cup of tea. I'll post photos of it when I am sure now I'll be buying it now.....

As a point of interest for some, you can find the grille used but be aware that 66 and 67 have differences in the two electrically.  Nothing that can't be made to work easily but not strictly plug and play either.  Also, the door panels are not repopped at this time.
Hey, how come 67 Charger questions are off topic??  :D :icon_smile_wink:

dads_69

Thanks for the info. Well I posted it in this area cause it seams no matter where I post certain questions. They always get moved  anyways, so I'm sure by morning, it'll be in general dis. haha. The door panels are hammered the guy says, need re-done. I haven't seen them myself, just walked by the car peaked underneath for rust and said, hmmm......He said then, I need it gone, make me an offer and I did just that. I will repair little things as this summer goes by and buy what I can where ever possible. No hurry to get it up and going. Also I need to pick a color for body. Gold and black int now. I'll do the int. all black is my plan right now.
Mark

Ghoste

That's cool.  I think you'll also find that once the fastback cult senses you are serious about the car, they become extremely helpful with parts.

kab69440

Re-upholstering the interior panels isn't nearly as difficult as you might think. I bet you can handle it.

sure is a big arm rest. what year charger it come off of?..

more pics man..

kab69440

Yeah, 01 was telling me about recovering his 3g panels, and I figured if it worked for him, it'll work for me. The vinyl of your choice, a healthy supply of headliner glue, a heat gun and  staplegun with 1/8" staples. It's time consuming as all get out, but not all that hard, really.

The armrest itself is a C-barge piece from a 73 New Yorker. They're comfy, so I kept them for the 69 before I scrapped the car. They have cool door releases that pull up at a 45 degree angle. They also have their own ashtrays and lighters embedded behind the power window switch. Neat stuff, I like 'em.

Heres a few quick photos of the car. The onwer found all black int. for it in his garage barried. Very nice condition also, minus carpet. I got a set of 15x7 cop wheels with small dish hub caps w/it. Hope to have it home by end of the week.

Thats a good looking project car.  If you got that under 2k I think you got a real good deal.

pettyfan43

sounds like you got a pretty good deal there. Great loking project, make sure you save that one, not many first gens left around

This is a link to a thread with my 66 Charger, getting it ready to drop a 440 in!

http://www.dodgecharger.com/forum/index.php/topic,29395.0.html

Good luck with that thing! Great color combo too by the way.

dads_69

I have been watching your thread about your car, sort of made me buy this won even more so. I dig the cop wheels.

Is there a hole in the top of the left fender for a turn signal light? IT has a 66 Right fender on it. If there's not a hole for the turn signal on the left side, it's a 66. It will also have a FULL LENGTH console if it's a 66 but the console will end at the rear of the front seats if it's a 67. (Same as a 68-70)

Thanks for the comments on my car, GOOD LUCK !!!!!!!!!!!! And GOOD SAVE!

dads_69

The center console goes back into the rear seats. Drivers fender has a small hole, for a turn signal light. Now this is where you tell me its a '66 isn't it? I'm getting an extra set of drive lines for it, heads, 906's, 742 rear end w/3.91 my second set now. 3.23 gears also in 489 case. Three sets of valve covers, rockers assembly ready to bolt on a BB. Stock 4 bbl carb and intake for a 383, dist. new 484. cam/lifter set. He found an extra grille w/head light doors and grille, so I might be ok on not needing a grille set up after all also. Still looking for exh. manifolds. I wrote to vin tag number down, but I left it at the guys house by accident. I'll make sure to decode it when I get it home now. Plus the title will say the year also. Anyways,I'm stoked about it. My wife said she remembers me saying how much I hated this year of charger and loved all my others, '68 to '70. I told her, it was time for a change.

Single or dual master cylinder is another indicator (66 still having the old single pot if it wasn't converted).  There are a whole bunch of other little ways to tell but it doesn't matter right now, the vin will tell you for sure.  Either way, it's a great deal and you will enjoy it.

pettyfan43

I had forgotten about that!  :haha:  If the console goes front to rear with out an opening, it is a 66. The hole you are seeing could be for that trim piece at the front of the fender chrome, like on your right fender. But check that Master Cylinder and the console those are the biggest giveaways. Those and the VIN number.

Cool find!

The brake set up is a dual master cylinder.
Topher, I will do a quick battery check on head light doors and see if they work, if not. How much do you charge to repair them?
The top of left fender moulding is missing from car, but inside, so maybe that hole is for the moulding vs a turn signal after all. I'll go back to the car after 6 pm.m tonight and get the Vin tag again. Most likely Saturday now I'll bring the car home.
Thanks for info. everybody!
I also joined the '66/'67 web site.

Send me a pm with a phone# and I'll call you. Look at the vin number and see if the 6th digit is a 6 or 7. My vin starts out XP29G7, which translates into a Charger body with a 383 2 bbl 67. My car is also a factory 4 speed car which makes it 1 of 117 born that way.

Rear view. Factory trailer hitch also. Hasn't been licenced for the road since 1985. I'm a big fan of rear hitches, reason being. I'll be able to tow my new dirt bikes behind it and blow everyone away at the same time!

Just make sure that trailer doesn't come loose and move ahead and punch a nice hole in the center of that tailight!

I went to the other charger web site, and I noticed that it doesn't say *charger* across the tail lights like others do. Is this normal or?
Mark

pettyfan43

No that isn't Normal, Have to see pictures up close of the lens to see what you are dealing with.

Kinda looks like someone sold some bits-n-pieces off the car. Maybe the lense letters were sold too.

I just got home from where charger is at till weekend. I did some digging inside the car, come to find out, its a 4 speed car, bell housing in trunk along w/other parts minus 18 spline. It has an auto console just sitting inside it, thats what made me think it was a auto car. Everything else is there, two extra grille, all the chrome trim plus another set for outside of car. I'll post more photos later. Only thing we couldn't find was the exh. manifolds in his garage. I looked through some books and found you can buy new rear tail light set ups. True or false? Price was over $400.00 also. If not, I'll be needing a good used rear T/L set up.
Mark

Wow Mark, this deal just keeps get sweeter.  As for those taillights, there's an excellent chance you will find them back ordered to forever but they do turn up from time to time.

Alright! Another 3 pedal car. These things came with A833 23 spline trannys. This is a killer find dude.

dads_69

Its going back to original color gold. The guy emailed me this morning also w/more info. for parts before I pick it up. I'm getting a '67 440 motor that doesn't run plus an extra 400 w/727 that runs also now. So I just bought a running 400 w/trani' for $250.00 for no reason now, but I'll find a use for it anyways. Car is an org. 383 but that motor is long gone, bummer, almost had a matching #'s car for $500.00. Oh well, I'm still stoked about the car. Its my first ever 1st gen charger ever in all my years of owning them since 1981. He did say the trani' was a 18 spline, but I agree, 23 is more like it. I found won last night here in town for $800.00 needs rebuilt w/bell housing. I have yet to buy it cause I'm sure its a deal or not yet for it.
The guys reason for selling car, hes moving and won't have a garage for it anymore and hates to see it just sit after 22 years of it being inside his garage and not doing anything more than just look at it. He lacks major body/paint/motor experience. But he was honset about everything.

Home sweet home! The owner of the car was there when I picked it up tonight, he was in tears and wanted to buy it back before I had the slide back take it away. I felt for the guy, but I told him I'll let him drive it when I get it up and running. My wife is just es-static now w/me having two mopars to restore this summer, not........

Hey, you can hate the game but don't hate the player.

Ghoste

Don't sweat the 383 part too much.  They weren't really numbers matching in 67 so the best you could have done with the original block was to have one that was in the correct date code window for the rest of the car.

pettyfan43

The good thing about the engine missing? USE THAT 440!!!!!!!!!!!! Have FUN with the car These cars are SO unique and cool, Getting a deal like that for 5 bills is KILLER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

HAVE FUN with the car!

dads_69

Did some cleaning on the charger tonight. Pulled the front wheels off just to look suspension, guy told me it had drum brakes, so I took his word for it, it has disc up front. I normally look a car over from top to bottom, I never take anyones words for anything, cause I tend to be a sceptic like most. For some reason, this time, I just wanted what I saw and bought it two days later w/out looking it over completely first. The 400 I have for it, the first motor I bought it rebuilt along w/trani' 727. Thats going in the car for now. '67 440 will be built over this next few months and a 4 speed is in play as well once again like it came from factory only an 18 spline vs 23. Thanks for everyones help w/info. I'm more excited about this charger than my last four 2nd gens! I had a '68 a few years ago w/a 451 stroker. It would hit 130 mph in a blink it seamed and wanted more, but I sold it, don't ask why, after restoring it and driving it for a few months, it needed a new owner and I made some sweet cash off it also, that helped.
Mark

That score just keeps getting sweeter, the disc conversion is already done! That is something I have to do on the green bomb!

Is it a swap, or factry discs? Can you post a couple pix of the setup Mark? Is the engine in yet?

They are factory set up. Here is a photo from last night. I took this photo around 11: 40 p.m. That how light it stays out here during the summer months. I'll be going out to the body shop later today where my Dart is and motors are. I need to buy a few items before installing engine and trani' set up first. I'm looking buy a new/rebuilt 18 spline trani' from Brewers Performance out of MCG magazine. Car has full auto console set up right now w/shifter, which is not mounted in place, just sitting on top w/console plate. 4 speed shifter guy gave me w/car is not a B-body style either. Funny part is, I'm paying more for the 4 speed trani' than I paid for the hoe car. I'm gonna go through the underside of the car before I take it for a test drive also, been sitting since 1985.

Do you have a part time job? You're gonna need it to tune those multi-piston calipers up, or replace the rotors. It's a neat neat thing to have, but remember there was only 15,788 sold in 67, and not too many of those had disc brakes.

P/T job, me, no way. I work enough at my one job. I live for the weekends. I make good cash doing bodywork/paint. I am thinking of sending the rotors out of state and having them redone and buy new rotors also. I didn't realize how rare this '67 was till I dig some research myself, now your info. is even better. I thought of just buying the Wilwood kit and bag the factory set up, but not now.
Thanks for the info. Topher

Mine does.  :D  Toph is right about the cost though, you do not want to know what I paid for a set of NOS rotors last summer.

dads_69

I bought a pair of factory rotors for my '69 SE 4 piston Bendix years ago for $300.00 each. They are two piece and calipers were rebuilt in New York for another $400.00 plus and then shipping both ways for me on top of that. If I find that these are going to cost that much again to rebuild. I will just swap them over to Wilwood at that rate and save the factory set up. I just washed the car also, my wife thinks I'm losing it bad now. Washing a car I can't even drive, women........
