I know this is a long shot but here goes. A co-worker is looking for his original 383 engine for his 1968 Charger. The VIN is XP29H8B303219. The Charger was his brothers who has passed away and he would like to reunite the engine and car (if at all possible) during the restoration. The engine was removed about 15 years ago and at that time the car was in Eastern Pennsylvania. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

The best bet would be the 68 Charger registry but I dont think there is one :shruggy:

Well, while were at it, I'll throw my "if" in here:

If he had the original engine, than he wouldn't be looking for it!   :yesnod:

It's along shot, but it's possible.  I found the original 440 for my '72 a few weeks ago - thanks to Moparts.com. If you haven't placed an ad there for the 383, do it.  There's an Engine and Trans lost and found thread in the "Moparts Club and Member Registry" section.  That's how mine was found.  The owners friend thought the numbers looked familiar and sure enough, a block sitting on the floor for 9 years was reunited with the car it originally came in.

Good luck!

That is an HP motor so it probably/maybe had the partial VIN stamping on the bellhousing flange. I can't remember now if all the HP motors had that stamp or not in '68 or if it was just the R/Ts. He might want to figure that out first. If that's not the case he could just find a 383 block with a cast date code that's 2-4 months prior to the car's build date and he'd be fine.

Just 6T9 CHGR

:iagree:  Not all 68's were VIN # stamped yet.....

I was going to say that but the VIN appears to be a late one (to me any way). Didn't they stamp all of them after the beginning of 1968 (the calendar year)? It would help to know if it was a 2bbl or 4bbl though. Either way, it's only a partial VIN.

Troy
Sarcasm detector, that's a real good invention.

According to the VIN decoder I used (http://www.eastcoastmusclecars.net/moparvindec1966_1974.htm) the VIN he listed shows it as an HP 383 which means it would have had a 4bbl carb. I know they didn't stamp everything after Jan. '68 but they did stamp all the R/Ts. What I'm not sure of is whether they stamped the 383 HPs. I know they didn't stamp the 2bbl 383s the 318s and the 6-bangers until '69.

Where's Dan? He's knows. IIRC Mark (triple green) has a stamp on his and it's a 383 HP.

Hah! I'm slipping - I should have just checked the VIN.  :leaving: I think my 383 HP block is stamped but the 2bbl isn't.
