Wounded Hemi on the mend (final build plans)

For those of you who remember my thread about busting a rod in my Hemi ( http://www.dodgecharger.com/forum/index.php/topic,28421.0.html ) I have some good news. It looks like the block is OK, it just needs some machine work and I'll be back in bid'ness. I have some more research to do but it looks like the "new" motor is going to take on a more sinister personality! Going with a 4.15 stroker and a roller cam. I'm going to build the bottom end to be bullet proof. She's going to be a whole lot stronger when I'm done. Remember....what doesn't kill ya makes ya stronger!

The Aquamax...yes, this bike spent 2 nights underwater one weekend. (Not my doing), but it gained the name, and has since become pseudo-famous. :)

Doug,

Glad to hear the block was able to be saved.  Now make us proud with that new upgraded motor!

Sure, I don't see why not. It's too bad the last one broke a rod. She was running REAL good! The thing would break your neck going to second and third. I had that motor cranking. I guess that was what led to the problem with the rod to begin with. I also found that I broke the mitymount on the left side  :D. I'm glad they have a lifetime warranty. I guess they didn't factor in the stresses of having a 4spd behind a Hemi. :o

That's excellent news Doug ! Those aftermarket blocks aren't cheap  :o The new build sounds like a winner !  :2thumbs:

I'm still trying to get mine painted so we can put it back together  :P Plan is to be at Norwalk in september for the Classic....you coming ?  :icon_smile_big:

Ron it's too hard to tell at this point. Looks like I'm already running into part supply problems. The crank I want to use is no where to be found (callies). I guess I'm going to have to start digging. I really want to use top shelf items this time around. Time will tell. I sure wish we could have gotten together before the rod let go, it would have been a good race. Now if I go stroker you will have an excuse.... :icon_smile_big:

My friend George with the 572 Road Runner had a problem getting a Callies from Barton awhile back.   He ended up with Scat as I recall.  Hope you find what you're looking for.

Don't worry Doug....you'll get no excuses from me !  :icon_smile_big: When it happens we'll have a few brewskies....i'll bring them !

The MP (Scat) cranks are very good. I just happen to have a 4.15 8bolt MP crank on the shelf.....but you can't have it !  :nana:

Saving it for a future stroker build  :icon_smile_big:

Ok...looks like it is all starting to come together now. I've got a line on most of the parts and will start ordering soon. I'll be running a 4.150 stroker kellog crank, Manley H beam rods (good to 800 HP) and diamond pistons (9.6 CR). Going with a custom grind Cam Motion roller cam. Block is going to be .030 over so I should be somewhere around 480 cubes when all is said and done. The guy doing the machine work has a dyno so I'm thinking of setting it up on the dyno before it goes in the car if I have anything left in the budget. I'm thinking I should see 550 to 600 HP by the time I'm done....... :coolgleamA:

Ron,
Nothing yet, I just gave the details to him today (car weight, tire size, gears, trans type, etc). I'll let you know when I get them. I figure that if I'm going down this road, I might as well go 100% and spec something out for the application instead of guessing at something on the shelf. The guy doing the machining has some Hemi super stock experience :D. Nothing but the best is going inside this motor!

That's a smart move Doug.....it only costs a few extra bucks to get a custom grind ordered up....money well spent, inmo   :2thumbs:

Cam Motion has some nice "street friendly" lobe profiles that aren't too hard on parts.  :yesnod:

OK, I finally got in touch with Tim from FHO tonight. After spending some time with me I have decided on the final build. He has everything I need in stock ready to go. Ohio crank 4.25 stroke with BBC journals, CP pistons 10 to 1 cr, and Manly rods. This was what I started out looking for but couldn't find the parts. I'll end up just over 500 cubes (closer to 515) after all is said and done.  I'm still waiting for the final grind spec on the cam but figure somewhere around .600 lift and 250 deg @ .050. The plan is to do the bores on the block next week and firm up the size of piston needed then order the bottom end and cam. Once the parts come in the block should go together by the second week in June. After that it's off to the dyno for initial fire up and tune. The motor should be back in before the 4th of July and I should make Carlisle with the fresh motor. I'll keep you guys post as we go along.  ;D

Nice....Tim know's how to build a strong Hemi ! He's a few hours away going west.....Going east about an hour away is McCallum's shop....lots of knowledgable Hemi guys up here !   :icon_smile_big:

Damn Doug, this engine keeps growing.....you're wanting to put the hurt on my little 446 !

Well, it's apart now so you might as well build it like you want  :2thumbs:

Looking forward to the buildup and subsequent dyno numbers !  :icon_smile_cool:

Well Ron, like they say...go big or go home! :D  With what is available now a days I might as well take advantage of it. I look at it this way...I'm going to have to spend the same money at 426 inches that I would at 500 inches. I won't have to do any modifications to the block for that stroke so what the hell, you only live once. I still hope to find a decent date code block, and if I do, then I have a home for this one. Until then I am where I am. I wouldn't be doing this if the motor held together. I'm not going to make the same mistake again, that's for sure. The only thing the I'm worried about is making too much power. I'm sure there is a limit to what the rest of the car can take. I guess I'll have to use some discipline for once.....

ps...I'm not going to hold you to our little challenge...it wouldn't be sporting of me...  :D  :nana: :punkrocka:

Doug,

I'd still like to do it assuming my heap gets back together soon.  :P It's going in for paint next week (with any luck) and he will have it for 2 weeks...then i can start putting it back together.  ;D The goal is to have it ready for Norwalk in september.

Tom....you and Douggie need to take it easy on us "little" wedge guys !  :nana: :haha:

HEMI DOUG....good luck with the build....tim banning is the man and will steer you in the right direction....build it right so it dont come apart

Hemidoug

Hey George! We're getting there. I ended up going with some parts I found locally. I would have had to drive up to Canada to pick everything up. I got a 4.150 Kellog crank, Manley H beam rods and Diamond pistons. The problem with all those stroker kits (Tim's included) are there is always one component that is mediocre. I talked to a couple of people I've known for quite a while that had some issues with the Ohio crank he was supplying. I'm sure they are good, but a Kellog would be better. I'm not going to take ANY chances this time, I learned a valuable lesson. We should be putting the motor together in about 2 weeks, then on to the dyno for break-in and tune. I'll post the results after the dyno. Looking for somewhere around 550 HP (stock manifolds). :D
