I have a kind of serious pet question for you, Dog related.....

We have a dog we got back in February.

The dog is a Pyrinese/Dalmatian mix, He is still a puppy, and we got him from the Vet's office here in the town we live in.

They put a nylon collar on him. There hasn't been a problem until today. The collar has gotten too tight, he has gone through a growth spurt and started filling out a good bit. His neck filled out really fast. I noticed this morning he was still asleep when he usually is up and running our other dog crazy. BUt when I went outside, he got up and seemed to be fine.

My wife told me he has been quiet today (I've been gone working on my Charger most of the day) so I went out to feed them and he was asleep again. He came out to eat and I started checking him out and he had wet fur underneath his neck at his collar, I checked and the collar was WAY too tight, so I cut it off him and he seems to be OK but the collar rubbed his neck really bad. His fur is wet and smells AWFUL. No vet's office is open but he seems to be OK, He ate a full bowl of food and is now back in his house asleep. He does scratch at it some.

We are gonna call the vet's office tomorrow and see what they say, but apparently his neck has started filling out pretty quickly and the collar got too tight pretty quickly.

Any Ideas that will help the poor guy, Anybody else had a Dog go through this?

Thanks

Chris G.

Take this however you want, but the best help would be getting an owner who has an idea of how to take care of him. He had a nylon collar on since February, and you are wondering why it's so tight? Are you serious? It's May BTW.

Clean up the sore area with some peroxide and put some antibotic cream on it til you get him to a vet.

RECHRGD

Well, you've corrected the problem, so unless an infection sets in he should be fine.  Not to bash you man, but how could you sit around and watch him grow without noticing that he needed a bigger collar??  Dogs are, in some ways, harder to raise than kids.  They can't tell you what is wrong with them.  Bob

I Do keep it checked, but he has hit a growth spurt, a week or so ago the collar was fine, Ease up a little bit, everybody makes mistakes. I have loosened the collar before. It still had plenty of room a week ago. I've never had a dog grow as fast as this one. Yes I spend time with him and yes we take good care of him. We got him after he was found wandering around where someone had dropped him off. We give him a safe home and feed him well and spend time with him. THIS WAS QUICK! I know we are to check the collar every two weeks.

It was a mistake and we made a run tonight to get some ointment and cleaned him up and got the ointment on him.

Chris G, I DO NOT appreciate being treated like I abuse this dog, We have one other dog and two cats, ALL OF THEM are well cared for. This just happened AS soon as I found the problem, I TOOK STEPS to make it right. Must be nice to be that damn perfect.

pettyfan43

AND if I was abusing or neglecting the little guy would I be stupid enough to announce it to the world?

Some people beat all. Something like this happens, and I look for help because I know it's a problem and I'm looking for help for the dog because I'm genuinely worried about him. And instead of help, some people have to bust on you and offer nothing to help at all.  If I didn't give a crap about him, would I have posted about this on 3 different message boards looking for help or suggestions.

NO THANKS to some of you, I DID find some help and have been outside after dark helping the guy and Tending to the problem. He will be going to the Vet tomorrow.

A couple of these posts are really bothersome. You don't know me or anything about me and you automatically decide I am mistreating this dog. This dog was found by a family and taken to the VET, Because he was starving and losing his fur. We adopted him and are giving him a home where he is safe (A big fenced yard) and make sure he is well fed with fresh water and spend time with him because he is DEAF. I love the little dog even though he can be maddening with some of the things he does.

This dog has NEVER been abused or neglected.

If it smells that bad, he definately has an infection going.  My outdoor male cat (loveable but a trouble maker) gets beat up every so often and I always put peroxide on it when I see him come in with a boo boo. Unfortunately 90% of the time Teddy gets  a skin infection and we need to get some antibiotics for him. It always helps the healing process and the SMELL. In fact, without antibiotcis, I don't even want to be around him. Something about an animals skin infection - UGH- I know THAT SMELL....I would sometimes rather sniff the animals ass just to get the smell out of my nose. Usually helps . Now seriously, your vet will give some antibotics for sure. Also, so he can't lick the area (because he will just lick his fur off) your vet will probably give you one of those lamp shade looking things for around his neck to keep him from licking and scratching the area and keep it clean.

I don't think you shoudl be bashed. It happens. Also, if you didn't care, you wouldn't have posted for advise. I have 5 cats and a Collie and I love my pets and get really FRANTIC when something happens to one of them also.

Keep the faith dude, its a lessoned learned. I'm sure you feel shitty enough already.

Thanks Cat, Yeah I feel crappy about it and as soon as I saw that there was a problem, I was trying to find out what to do to help the little fella out, and i get hammered on by this guy and chided by two others. Rather than try to help, they take potshots.  Since they spend every waking moment watching my every move I guess they automatically knew what happened.

Like I said he has hit a growth spurt and I have never seen a dog grow like this before, he has also started filling out really quick. I won't put a collar back on him because he is in a big fenced in yard anyway.

After we cleaned him up with peroxide twice and then treated him with some ointment to protect him, he feels a lot better, he has been eating well (that never changed) and for a while he was playing with the other dog again.  He's feeling better and when last I checked on him, the smell had died WAY down.

I tried to help :bawling:

Yes you did and TO be honest I REALLY meant to thank you for that. Those others made me so mad though that I just forgot it. YEah We took your advice and cleaned him a few times with Peroxide. He seemed to like that and it seemed to help him a good bit.

Thank you, and I AM SORRY I forgot to thank you before.

You're an angel

You are very welcome. I never judge anyone.  I hope the puppy is feeling better.

68chrgrwife

even though you have a fenced yard you should have a collar and tags on him.....I know this from expierence...my dog dug through my yard, my neighbors yard and her neighbors yard to get out...they will and can do it...I hope that everything is ok with your dog...becareful about going to the vet though..you could put out tons of $$ for nothing..if the area is cleaned and treated just keep an eye on it..if he doesn't start healing in a day or two then take him.....I took my dog to the vet for a minor problem and ended up spending $300+.  And I think he would have been just fine..they only shaved and cleaned the area and gave me bacitracin to put on it.

Mrspettyfan43

For those of you who have offered advice.... Thank you.  As my husband stated, we were out well after dark cleaning the area and applying ointment. The good news is that the smell as already lessened quite a bit (almost gone) and he is starting to act a fool again ;)

ChrisG and Rechrgd.. Our animals ARE our children. We take very good care of them. As a matter of fact they are spoiled rotten. Our puppy was only 18 pounds when we got him at 5 months. I have never seen a dog grow as fast as he has. I think maybe he is making up for lost time.

I am not going to rehash what my husband has already said, but I will say that before you accuse someone of such a HORRIBLE crime (and I do think that any kind of abuse to a living thing is a crime) you need to think twice. ChrisG and Rechrgd, you do not know us and to assume that we abuse our animals is very sad to me.

Thanks again for the advice!

P.S. I just got off the phone with  my cousin who is a vet and she said that what has happened is common and that we are treating it the exact way she would. :)

pettyfan43

Thank You 68Chargerwife, I appreciate that, looks like maybe we got it under control. He's a great little dog.

Still not sure about a collar but after he gets through with this growth spurt maybe but MAN that was FAST!

Please tell me today is not the only time you have woken up with your head up your ass. Or is this a regular thing?

This has been explained, Grow up and don't be that guy!

pettyfan43

Charger73 and 69Charger2002 Thanks a bunch guys, apparently this is pretty common for large breed puppies. Some people just have no clue.

He's already been playing with the other dog some so he is getting better.

For those who pick on Petty Fan, you should know this. Many, Many MANY of us are animal lovers here. If you couldn't tell by the sincerity of this post - they LOVE their dog.  Don't get me on a soapbox on this one 'caus I will go ape shit (no offense to apes).   Just so you know where I stand, theres a place in hell for those who abuse children and animals and I will defend my position on this subject as long as I live.  Having said that, it was obvious to me that Mr and Mrs Petty Fan are NOT the abusive types. Open your hearts.

These attacks aren't warranted.  In fact my first thought was about the dog, then in retrospect, how bad the owners must feel about it.  We all make mistakes.  Don't make them feel any worse. Hell, I have an avitar with a Football Helmet on a cat - - anyone care to call shit on me for that??

Thanks for caring,

TUF CAT.

Drache

Does it make me a bad pet owner when my dog had a pellet in it's leg for 4 days and I didn't notice because the dog wouldn't let anyone within 2 meters of him? Mistakes happen! My uncle loved his dog and was at work when the dog escaped and got hit by a car. The dog was pretty much fine although it refused to eat. My uncle phoned two vets and asked why the dog wouldn't be eating (not knowing the dog was hit by a car). They both told him to keep trying over the weekend and bring him in on Monday. By monday afternoon the dog was on the operating table trying to fix internal bleeding but passed away even after getting a transfusion from another dog!

Petty Fan dont let those jerks get you all riled up, just think of them as schoolyard bullies. Personally I hope your dog is ok!

Thank you Tuf and Drache.

We do love our animals, they are like our children. We have two cats and two dogs because we really enjoy the companionship and the downright fun they can provide. We appreciate the unconditional love that they are so willing to give.

And we won't be bullied. I mean I know that these people would never say this garbage to my face. They are not man enough. They think they are cool sitting behind a keyboard.

Thanks again to all who have tried, directly OR indirectly to help. To those that think starting crap when someone is just looking for some help, I really can't say what I am feeling, but it is two words, seven letters starts and ends with F!

Chris G, I DO NOT appreciate being treated like I abuse this dog,

Like I said dude, take my words however you want. You obviously took them very personally because you mentioned how mad you were in like 10 posts. I don't think you abuse dogs, and I guess I am a little more nuts about taking care of dogs than most people. When we got our pup from the pound, and anything on him was gone the same day. He goes to the vet at least once a month just to get checked.

Don't take things so harsh. You made a post about how your dog was choking because he outgrew a collar he had on since February. Did you expect everyone to tell you how wonderful of an owner you are? I'm guessing you were. After all is said and done, I don't think you are a bad owner. I just think you need to be more aware of what's going on with this dog. Shoot me if you want.

glad your buddy is getting better,.. sorry some folks arn't...  :-\
