What's it Worth?

So what's it worth today?  Daytona, (not mine) 440, auto, V2, black int,  has fender tag and correct build sheet, has a later 440.  Complete project,  not rusty but will need nose shell work, internals OK.  Off the road since early '80s.   What do you think?

Maybe this is oversimplified, but I look at it this way...

The Present Value should be equal to its Restored Value less the Restoration Cost.

PV = RV - RC

It's been a few months since I have seen a Daytona actually sell, so I'm a little fuzzy on what the going rate is for a restored 440/auto Daytona (post Barrett-Jackson 2007 hiccup).  I'm guessing $150-$170k?? 

Do you think a really nice professional resto on the car would cost $40-$50k?

If those guesses are anywhere close to correct, then I'd figure the value this way:

PV = $160k - $45k

PV = $115k

You were pretty close Geno.  I'm thinking $95k to $105k depending on which way the wind blows.      It's nicer than the Missouri car that showed up a couple summers ago, but it will probably need a Gregory or McGaughey nose shell.

All I know is that the last Daytona auction I payed attention to was the Daytona S.E. in light yellow (Sunflower)...  It blew me away it only went for like 120k ish...  Prices are up and down right now...  That car looked like a total re-body though...

People seem to consistanly shoot close to 100k for them though... 


That guy with the BURNT Daytona got 45k JUST FOR THE VIN PLATE!!!  Amazing.

That yellow Daytona had an asking price of $140k, and the highest offer they got was $100k (which was declined).  Here is the eBay auction link.  It was/is a nice looking car, but from the DSAC records it was also clear that it had way more miles on it than were being disclosed.  I wonder if it actually sold apart from eBay - did you hear something about that, Jude?

I do think you're right, that the overall market prices are down.

I won't complain if prices are down some.   I just wrote a $1000 check for insurance on the cars.   It starts getting pricey when you get over $100k.

I would probably put wing cars in the same category as Hemi Cuda convertibles.  It is nearly impossible to put an accurate estimated value right now.  You can take some great guesses but just when you think you've provided the most well informed attempt, someone either comes along and throws more money than God at the car, or it tanks and seems like a giveaway.

I wishing that the prices on them were like they were in the 80's. Not just so that I could afford one, but so that the people who would be purchasing them would be the ones who truly care about them, and aren't just "in" to them due to their values.

I think thats what irks me the most too.  I know there are a lot of well heeled guys buying them who love them too, but I know a lot more that are buying them as part of their portfolio.

Just curious, but how do you come up with a figure like $178K on a car? I'm looking at restored cars, and seeing prices slightly higher than that. Which granted thats a nice car, but the people who are shelling out those kinds of figures want cars restored to factory specs. Which is why I think cars like say Dougs, and John Pappas, while they are great cars, and Daytona's that I'd love to have to call my own. However I don't think they would bring that kind of a figure on the open market. Maybe I'm wrong. But the amount that someone would have to pay to say convert Johns car back to factory specs, and do a restoration would be the same as you'd be spending to do a project car. So I don't think those high dollar spenders would drop that kind of money on a car even though they are complete cars, and very presentable. However someone who loves the cars might, which is where the wrench gets thrown into the equation.

I have seen this car in person , I will say the current owner must have vision problems , if he thinks those Puff Daddy rims look good !!!!!!!!!More likely the rims dropped value 20k , just because of ugliness . From what I recall , the car is a driver . Larry

I know it wasn't your figure Dave, just wondering how someone puts a value on their own car. I have no clue what value I'd put on my 500. I know what I think other 500's are worth, but my own, no clue.

As far as the misalligned nose cone, I say leave it be. Its where Creative put it. They put them on, and didn't take hours lining them up. Leave it the way it is, thats my opinion.
