Will 17"rims work on a 1969 charger???

I want that look of large diameter Torque thrust II's. Can anyone recommend the largest tire that will fit front and back? I've been told by... Ughh Town Fair tire that the fronts should be 225/55/16 and the rears 255/45/17 with a 4 1/2" backsets. I've searched threads only to find info on 16" rims.

Corellian Corvette

I have 15x10 in the back with no fit problems at all. I see no reason why 17's won't fit, you just need to make sure the overall tire diameter is the same.

chargerboy69

I run 17X8 with a 4.5" backspace up front and 18X10 with a 5.5" backspace  in the rear. Hope this helps.

No. . . They do not make a 295 50 18. I run a 285 40 18. The backspacing is perfect. I will probably get a wider tire before summer is out. It is not even close to rubbing on the lip.

I took several this weekend, but I did not like how they came out. The car is not sitting right. It needs to come down 2 inchs in the rear yet. I will get some for you tomarrow.

I am sorry it took so long to post a picture, but I did not like how it was sitting, and did not want to post any pictures of it. I just lowered it 2 inches in the rear, and 1 in the front. It does rub during hard left turns now that the front is lowered more. I guess that means I can not use it for NASCAR.  ;D

Thanks Mike. . . Those are the same wheels you have, same size too.

I have my 4 wheel disc brake set up lined up for the car, but it will not go on until late fall.

I went with the Falken tires, because they were cheeper than the Dunlops, plus they look good. But they do not hook up worth a sh!#. They ride well, but if you hammer it off the line, they will smoke. I was thinking of trying a set of Nitto tires, but I have talked to a few people that did not like thier Nittos. I just hate to spend $300 a tire on the Dunlops. Have you had anything that you liked?

Tim, what size tires would you get next on the rear.  You said bigger.  I want to put some 18's on my project and will do some measuring once I get the wilwood 12" disks in this week.  Just looking for a place to start.  Going w/ Foose nitrous wheels 18 x 8 and 18 x 10.  Sorry to hijack thread.  Mike

Mike,

Nitto makes a 295 45 18. Which is the size I want, I am just not sure about the brand. I have heard good and bad things about Nitto tires.I might end of going with Dunlop 9000 tires. Just not sure yet, as I will probably just run what I have until next spring.

Well here's my input on the tires. For everyday driving the Nitto NT555s are pretty good. I have found that the wet traction is ok and the dry is very good as well. NOW... if you push the car past 8/10ths the tires will squeal - on the autocross course and on the road courses I've been on these tires were in trauma. Again, great street tire, so-so track tire. For the money though they're hard to beat.

If I was going with a street/track tire I would go with the Michelin Pilot's... BIG money though.

Has anyone heard anything about the Toyo Proxes T1-R's??
I'm planning on running 18s & 19s with the Foose Challenger wheels. I was gonna use 285/35/19s in the rear & 245/45/18s in the front. Maybe I should check out the Nitto's??

Tim,

Well I ended up going old school and bought 15" rims 275/50/15 and 245/60/15 with 5" offset in the rear. they fit well, fronts rub a little on the fender but I'm not happy. I want your look exactly. Will you let me know the specs you went with plus what you would have went with to get that fattest rear tire. Can you suggest the best place to shop fro a price too? Finally, how did you lower the rear? thanks steve

chargerboy69

Steve,

I sold the black car you see above several months back. I have another Charger I am just finishing up (pictures coming soon) with just about the same wheel and tire set up on my black car. The new wheels on my new Charger are Boyd Coddingtons with Nitto 555R tires.

Fronts are 17X8 with 4.5" backspace with a 245 45 17 tire.

Rears are 18X10 with 5.5" backspace with a 295 45 18 tire.

Best prices by far to buy the wheels is Rons Rims.   http://www.ronsrims1.com/Ron%27s%20Rims/Welcome.html

I searched everywhere for the best wheel prices, and I found Rons was by far the cheepest. I have purchased 3 sets of Boyds from Ron and his service is great. As far as tires I bought mine off of E-Bay. Tires get pricey, so I just watch E-Bay. My rears I just purchased off E-Bay are brand new and the guy never had them mounted, still has the stickers on them. I saved almost $300.00 buying them from him verses Discount Tire or Tire Barn.

As far as lowering the car, in the picture above, the car was lowered 2", which I felt was to much. I switched that out to 1 1/2" the next day. I used lowering blocks to do that. Bought a universal kit from Autozone for $19.99. Worked perfect. Below is my old black car with a 1 1/2" lowering block kit. If you need anything else just ask.

Take care.

Tim,

Thanks for your speedy reply. Let me get your opinion...Ron's has 17x8 in stock but 18x10 is special order and of course an upcharge and 3 weeks lead time. With 17s do you think I'll need 5.5 bs in the rear? Also do you think it will be a bid compromise over the 18's?

steve

chargerboy69

Steve,

If you went with a 17X8 wheel in the rear you want a 4 to 4.5" backspace. If you went with a 17X10 in the rear I would go with 5.5". I would get the 18X10, but that is just my opinion. Of course alot depends on your budget too. For me, wheels can make or break the cars looks, so I spent a little extra.

A three week build time is not to bad. If you are looking at Boyds they really are a quality wheel, and well  worth the wait. The less common wheels like mine are custom made to order and I believe mine took about 4 to 6weeks to arrive.

John is correct. I do run Shrikes. Hey John, How are things? I had them on my black car and I bought another set for my white car. The set I bought for my white car are a little different then the black car. My new wheels have a smooth lip instead of the rolled, and the new ones are a 1/2 wider too.

As far as Mike, he told me they were Shrikes. MSRacing89 you built his car, so you would know, but that is what he told me. I do know that Mikes wheels look identical to mine.

Steve, the Shrike wheels are not listed. You will have to special order them. They are around $400.00 each from Rons. Plus $1000.00 for the smooth lip added to the set. Some websites I checked on had them for $500.00 to $600.00 each wheel. That is not a bad price on the wheels you are looking at. The only thing I suggest is running Nitto tires instaed of Falkens. I ran Falkens on the black car and they did not get any traction.

Things are going well over here.

Was suppossed to get sent to Ft. Sam Houston for six months of training a few weeks ago and the Army put it off due to my knees. Looks like I might be around for car show season. I am hoping. The wife sure is happy about that.

Your right they do look different. These wheels in the picture haven't even been on a car yet. I have them here in my den just looking at them.  :-\ I will probably get them on within the next couple weeks.
