How much does a good 727 rebuild cost these days??

I'm about to assemble the drivetrain for my 70, but I want a tranny shop to handle my 727 rebuild. I want it done right so I wont even attempt it.

When this was a daily driver 5 years ago, I had the trans rebuilt by a local guy, and long story short, reverse went out 2 more times before he finally gave up on it. Thats why I had it built in the first place. Reverse burned out. They never could rebuild it right.

Back then this was a bone stock 73 440 with a cam and a six pack. This time around it's getting a 500+ cubic inch stroker. Easily 450 hp. And in a heavy car with 3.23's, it's going to have to be right.

What can I expect to pay, and any ideas why the reverse band kept burning out like that??

Thanks.

I don't know about a reg. shop.  There is a reputable and very good rebuilder around here that charger site people know, that used to have his own transmission shop, but now works out of a home shop, so the deal is, he will go and grab the trans. that you have removed, and take it apart there and inspect it, and then take it back to his shop and rebuild however you want.   a 727 stock rebuild, he says that is good to 500hp, is about 680 bucks if I remember right.   He just doesn't want to have the overhead of shop and have to remove the trans. from cars I guess, I don't know.  So ad on the labor of a shop removing the trans on top of that, ? or maybe find a shop that is cool with you dropping the trans. off there after you removed it and save some labor cost.

Why would you want anything else?  Just give me a Charger and I'll be happy.

I agree about removing the tranny yourself and taking it to the shop.

You'll probably get it rebuilt (well) for no more than $7-800, IF  they don't have to mess with removal & installation.

I just paid under $1000 to have my 727 rebuilt, they also put in TransGo TF2 shift kit in it (I bought it on ebay while ago)

I am curious about the TF2 shift kit.  Would this work well with a Hurst ratchet type shifter?   or is it sort of redundant,  like you should just manually shift the hurst shifter.  I drove Mark's 69 with a shift kit (TripleGreen, nicest guy in the world, he actually let me drive his car around Kent!! last summer), anyways, I liked that the shift kit kept the car from shifting until higher rpms, then when it did shift it had a nice shift feel, sort of a lunge/jolt, but not harsh, hard to explain,  and then when you were slowing down, it would downshift, was really cool.
How much did you buy that shift kit for on ebay?  I have the trans out of car now and was going to get reg. rebuild, but was considering a shift kit.
