it all depend on the oil pum shaft being installed correctly because even thou it SHOULD be at 5 oclock it could be elsewhere if the gear is not in right

And if it back fires, then you're 180 degrees out.

Yeaup...   At TDC the slot of the oil pump drive should be parallel with the camshaft.

this is the position needs to have on oil pump shaft to get #1 on right position with TDC on #1. Parallel notch ( or much as posible ) with crank on BB/RB engines

MR.MIKE

okay guys

how do i align oil shaft ?? ???

the oil pump shaft doesnt "need' to be inline with the cam, it just makes it more uniform for people to find #1 plug location. i personally dont worry about it. the best way to find where #1 plug wire is, is to pull number1 plug out and turn the motor over until you feel compresion coming out the hole, then bring the engine to tdc pull and pull the distributor cap off. the rotor is pointing at #1 plug wire terminal.   if you do it this way, you cant be 180 degrees out.     good luck!

:iagree:

the oil pump shaft position is just a guide to get the spark plug wires same on all cars and is a way to begin with everything located.

Another reason to get the shaft on that position is the advance vacuum located where you have MORE ROOM to get the dist advanced or retarded on timming

While you have your distributor out, you can see a portion of the cam gear through the hole. Your timing chain may be worn.
If it ain't broke, fix it 'till it is.
