I need any info about the 8.75" rear end, and a 2.76 gear ratio :icon_smile_question:, sorry guys if this has already been coveredĀ  :icon_smile_blackeye:

terrible one

What do you need to know about it? I'm pretty sure this is the lowest ratio (or was there a 2.73?) Definitely more of a highway gear.

To find out if you have a sure-grip rear, jack the rear of the car up, and spin one wheel. If the opposite wheel spins in the opposite direction, you have an open rear end. If it spins in the same direction, you have a sure-grip unit.

I think they made a 2.45 as well? but i'm not positive. I know there was a 2.45 in the 8 1/4 rear end. There are 3 different carriers, the 489, 741, and 742 carriers. Each has a different set of gears I beleive, due to the pinion, and I know setup is slightly different between the 3. I'm not really sure what your asking exactly, so if you have any more specific questions go ahead and ask, somebody here will be able to answer it.

So would it hold up pretty good with a mostly stock 440?, because the car is an original small block carĀ  :-\

If it is ok to begin with, It should hold up to an automatic transmission just fine.   Grumpy

2.76 is the lowest numeric gear ever offered with the 8 3/4", this gear was pretty much standard equipment in many 440 equipped C barges.
Pardon me but my karma just ran over your dogma.

mean one

They did have a 2.45 in a newport in 1970 with a 8 3\4  if you ordered a 383  2 bbl if you lived in ca.

defiance

I used a 2.73 8-3/4 non-sure grip with my stock 440 + auto for years.  No problems other than not really liking a ratio that high.  Or low.  Or however you describe it.  Low ratio, high speed.  Bah, you know what I mean  :)
